Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

P.M. Jaworski
Western Standard
November 8, 2008

Associate editor, Terrence Watson, posted a satirical letter from the Western Standard to American youth who could expect to be required to serve 50 to 100 hours per year in "volunteer" activities. That was the obvious implication of the statements found on Obama’s website, Change.gov.

As news of the community service army draft trickled out, Obama webmasters began to scrub references to "mandatory" and "require." Take a look at these before-and-after quotes taken from the America Serves portion of the website:

Before (notice the highlighted section, especially the word "require"):

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

After (notice that the "requirement" has been changed to "setting a goal," as well as the fact that now college students can expect to be remunerated for their "volunteering"):

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start

Wow I guess we are in for some changes. And I thought I could enjoy retirement. LOL

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

did he serve? i don't remember reading where he did....

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

No he didn't but get ready to serve everyone. And I don't think 4 thousand will make a big dent in tuition.

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

I'm sorry but I have to say this the first thing that came to my mind was Hitler. Forcing children to serve. I am just going to sit back and see what happens next.

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

you are kidding right?.. Hitler?.. gimmie a break. :nono:

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free.

so working to make your community better and as a plus you get help with a college education is a bad thing and is comparable to hitler?.. wow!.

No where does it say every single American has to do community service. Only if you want to avail yourself of certain programs.

No I'm not and since this is still a free country I believe I am entitled to my opinions. And I believe you are entitled to yours.

The Problem

Americans Not Asked to Serve After 9/11: President Bush squandered an opportunity to mobilize the American people following 9/11 when he asked Americans only to go shopping.

Insufficient Federal Support for Service: While more than 500,000 people have served in AmeriCorps, the program turns away tens of thousands of applicants a year because of limited funding.

Need for More R&D in Nonprofit Sector: Research and development in the nonprofit sector is limited and there is a disconnect between charitable foundations that can fund innovation and the organizations on the ground that can test new concepts and bring them to scale.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden's Plan
Enable All Americans to Serve to Meet the Nation's Challenges

* Expand Corporation for National and Community Service: Obama and Biden will expand AmeriCorps from 75,000 slots today to 250,000 and they will focus this expansion on addressing the great challenges facing the nation. They will establish a Classroom Corps to help teachers and students, with a priority placed on underserved schools; a Health Corps to improve public health outreach; a Clean Energy Corps to conduct weatherization and renewable energy projects; a Veterans Corps to assist veterans at hospitals, nursing homes and homeless shelters; and a Homeland Security Corps to help communities plan, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
* Engage Retiring Americans in Service on a Large Scale: Older Americans have a wide range of skills and knowledge to contribute. Obama and Biden will expand and improve programs that connect individuals over the age of 55 to quality volunteer opportunities.
* Expand the Peace Corps: Obama and Biden will double the Peace Corps to 16,000 by 2011. They will work with the leaders of other countries to build an international network of overseas volunteers so that Americans work side-by-side with volunteers from other countries.
* Show the World the Best Face of America: Obama and Biden will set up an America's Voice Initiative to send Americans who are fluent speakers of local languages to expand our public diplomacy. They also will extend opportunities for older individuals such as teachers, engineers, and doctors to serve overseas.

Integrate Service into Learning

* Expand Service-Learning in Our Nation's Schools: Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year. They will develop national guidelines for service- learning and will give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience. Green Job Corps: Obama and Biden will create an energy-focused youth jobs program to provide disadvantaged youth with service opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast-growing career fields.
* Expand YouthBuild Program: Obama and Biden will expand the YouthBuild program, which gives disadvantaged young people the chance to complete their high school education, learn valuable skills and build affordable housing in their communities. They will grow the program so that 50,000 low-income young people a year a chance to learn construction job skills and complete high school.
* Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Obama and Biden will establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.
* Promote College Serve-Study: Obama and Biden will ensure that at least 25 percent of College Work-Study funds are used to support public service opportunities instead of jobs in dining halls and libraries.

Invest in the Nonprofit Sector

* Social Investment Fund Network: Obama and Biden will create a Social Investment Fund Network to use federal seed money to leverage private sector funding to improve local innovation, test the impact of new ideas and expand successful programs to scale.
* Social Entrepreneurship Agency for Nonprofits: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will a create an agency within the Corporation for National and Community Service dedicated to building the capacity and effectiveness of the nonprofit sector.

Yep, Sounds exactly like Hitler to me.

and as you can see.. your post is not the original text but phrases cut together.

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

I'm still sad McCain didn't win

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

This isn't about President Bush. It's a new day and changes are in the works. That is what he promised right? I just pointed out that Obama said required then changed it to setting a goal. I realize you support Obama so I think you will be happy with whatever he does. I say let's see how it plays out.

I don't have thescreen shotss but rather you like it or not the wording was changed. Yes sounds like Hitler to me.

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

So here's the deal. He's the next president so if for some reason I am required to serve I will make sure to do my duty.LOL

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

I didnt say he didnt change mandatory.. I said your first post the text is wrong.. That is not whats on his site. Wherever you got that from they left text off and put text where it isnt.

If you don't want to volunteer don't. But to compare Obama to Hitler is ridiculous. Its not only a disservice to obama but to the millions of people who lost their lives due to Hitler. I have posted a link to Obama's site if anyone is interested in getting facts.

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

My mother grew up in Germany and through WWII. Many things here can be very likened to what they did there in what the citizens were required to abide by.

Mandatory volunteerism is not true volunteerism--it's forced servitude.

Little by little, our rights and freedoms have been diminishing through time.

It's not "we the people" anymore; it's "we the corporate America".

As I said before I believe I am still free to compare his stance on requiring service to Hitler's requiring a whole lot of service. You can go to his site all you like but it won't make a difference to me.

Also I hope that every time I question Obama you won't feel the need to criticize me. I would love to feel like I can post even if we disagree.

Re: Obama camp scrubs website to remove references to “mandatory” community service

I havent criticised you but if you are going to compare The president elect with a mass murderer i'm going to put my 2 cents in. if you are entitled to your opinion I am entitled to mine.

And He is only requiring service to those who want to get the money for college..Those who go to his site will see that.. others can get their info from blogs if they like.

And?

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

helping teachers? finding new ways for retirees to volunteer? veterans corps? head start? Americorps?... yeah, I can see how all those things compare to hitler.. ... No where does it say it is mandatory... no where.

I saw sone criticism but if you didn't I guess that's your take. The word require kind of stood out for me and if it wasn't a problem it would still be there.

I'm not going back and forth on this with you so I guess the next time I question the POTUS to be we will chat again.
