How did the debate go?

The wink offended me as well. I thought it was really tacky. She didnt fall on her face like many thought but expectations were so low she really could do nothing but improve.

I thought Biden did a good job of not attacking her. Im sure there were moments he wanted to. I spent most of the debate screaming would you answer the &^#*@ question!.

You guys are hilarious...completelyme - I cracked up with your "gosh darn"...that really bothered me too.

I was very curious to see this debate too - I actually watched more than I thought I would (waiting for the train wreck?). I thought she did okay, but she sounded so unprofessional many times - especially with words ending with "ing"...say bringing...she'd say bringin'. She did this so many times. I also think she should knock off the soccer mom bit - it is getting old.

I have to admit I did feel like I was watching Tina Fey debate...I can't help it. She looks just like her and I have a hard time separating the two!

Biden did okay - I was surprised how often he smiled when she said something (almost lovingly), but then the fangs came out toward the end.

I don't think this debate will sway voters, but I do think this was probably the most watched vice presidential debate ever! People are just fascinated with Palin - whether you like her or not!

jen, I was thinking the same thing! Doggone it, Palin, you look just like Tina Fey!

Katie Couric hit the nail on the head when she referred to Palin's speach as "folksy." Her dropping the ing was deliberate, as if to say, "Look at me, folks! *wink* I'm just like you!" although I rarely ever drop the ing off of words like that.

Bob Schieffer was on-point too when he said he was disconcerted with her dodging questions by not giving answers. She knew she wasn't answering the questions yet kept saying americans wanted "straight talk." Yeah, so give me some!!!

What was so funny about Biden was his demeanor after a while. He started out politely smiling and by the end he was less than amused and forcing one  I thought I was going to lose it when he started talking about his son. Like I said before, I'm not exactly a fan of Biden but to see him choke up a bit over mentioning his son made me want to hug him. Same thing with Palin holding her baby at the end of the debate. That is the first time I've looked at Palin in that way...a soft, parent-to-parent kinda way. At the end of the day she's still a mother and a mother to a special needs child no less. I am not without compassion to her challenges as a mother.

And while I'm thinking about it...what was that remark about Biden's wife being in heaven? Hubby and I had just put the boys to bed when we heard that and went OMG huh?

In my opinion Palin did much better than I thought she would. This is going to be a very, very interesting Presidential election. I respect John McCain for his years of service to this country and his sacrifices. BUT during the Republican Nation Convention I watched his speech. He made a comment that very much turned me off. He said we needed a President that would stand up to "big oil" , "tobacco" and UNIONS. Yes he said UNIONS and it made me sit up and take note that he is Anti-Union. Does he not realize UNION jobs are higher paying jobs than non-union jobs? Does he expect Americans to live off of flipping hamburgers at McDonalds? We need a President that will support the rights of American workers which is what UNIONS do! We also need to close our borders and get rid of all these free trade agreements. Anyone with half a brain knows that if a company has the chance to close a plant here in the US and move "south" or overseas paying much cheaper wages will do so.
I have worked for the same manufacturing company for almost 19 years. Four years ago this company was acquired by Trelleborg Automotive which is a huge worldwide company. One of the first things they did was close their newly acquired UNION manufacturing plant in Logansport, Indiana. Putting hundreds out of work. That left the plant I work at as their last remaining UNION plant in the United States. On Oct. 8th, 2008 even though business was booming and 12 hour shifts were needed to keep up with the orders, this company "out of the blue" invoked the WARN Act ( 60 day notice of plant closure ) to close their last remaining U.S. UNION plant. As I type this machines are being moved out of the plant and moved to lower paying non-union plants and cheap overseas labor. Please understand that this is not a company on the verge of bankruptcy. This is a huge worldwide, wealthy company that buys out and builds new plants on a yearly basis. I am losing my job solely due to a companies greed for money, money, money. This is a wealthy company and their train of thought is how much more money can we make. Just tossing the American worker aside to try to find a lower paying job.
If you are wondering about a severance package hourly workers do not get severance pay. Only management does and as my supervisor told me they were very well taken care of.
I do not support any presidential nominee that does not support good paying UNION jobs. John McCain and George Bush have both publically announced they are anti-union. In my eyes this tells me they do not care about the average American being able to survive on a paycheck. Especially someone like me that is a single parent.
I do not support John McCain and his anti-union thought that lower paying jobs will help our economy. This is only political B.S. Next Friday nearly 100 workers will lose their good paying jobs where I work. John McCain supports this because we are UNION workers. With my seniority I expect to lose my job in about a month.
If John McCain wants to be President he needs to get his head out of his butt and start caring about the average American workers.

I thought the missed opportunity of the debate was after Gov Palin said how lowering taxes always increases jobs. What country does she live in? I think these last few years have shown that lower taxes to the wealthy and corporations does not always lead to job growth.

Being an independent (or a self-stylized member of the "Practical Party"), I would be all for lower taxes on businesses that create more jobs in America! Sure give the owner of my favorite pizza joint a tax break - he employs my neighbors. But don't give a tax break to a so-called American company who makes their product in Indonesia employing 14-year-old girls. And as the "American" high-tech companies keep moving the engineering jobs to Russia and China, I'd be happy to see them pay higher taxes.

I also thought Palin's comment about folks who knew they could only afford a $100k house buying a $300k house showed her lack of understanding. In many locals, a 2bd 1 bath tiny home cost $300k! And, let's be honest, people know so little about money that if both the realtor and bank say "sure you can afford it" they think they can.

Considering his age and health, I think McCain's vice president pick needed to be nearly equal to him in qualifications - Gov Palin is so unprepared to be president that McCain's judgment should be seriously questioned.

Note to goodguy: The Republican Party has always been anti-union, that is part of their platform. Unions go against their idealistic/utopian belief in the power of the "free market."

Concerning the income levels discussed earlier:

OK, instead of relying on my memory, I checked with the census bureau info for income. These numbers include all sources of income, including stuff like pensions, SS, interest, child support, etc.

Turns out they now have a 2007 report, so not so out of date.

Median Household Income: ~$50k

Households in ranges (rounded):

$25k and under: 25%
$25k - $35k : 10%
$35k - $50k: 14%
$50k - $75k: 18%
$75k to $100k: 12%
100k +: 20%

This would likely put "middle class" about $25k to $85k (or $90k) - which should leave about 25% below middle and 25% over middle. Have to guess on the high number since the stats don't give the 75th percentile number.

I have a question...

is the under $75k middle class? is that 1,2,3,etc. per household?

I'm actually thinking about quitting my job, taking out a business loan, and possibly starting my own business... something i loveeeeeee doing.... i don't like my job now (never have )..... i want something more.... i'm just curious on what americans really "think" obama will change? will there be there mass "change" everyone seems to think there will be once he's in office.. i'm sooo confused honestly on who's right who's wrong....

I think alot of changes need to be made.... and to be honest.. is it obama.... is it mcCain? This is one hard election...

Right now you don't want to quit your job and take out a business loan. For one, money to borrow, even for established companies on good financial footing is not readily available. That is why they are trying the bail out plan.

Before you start a business, take some SBA courses at your local community college/jr. college. They offer low cost courses that talk about business plans, legal concerns, finances, SBA loans... They also discuss keeping your job or having substantial savings before leaving your job to make sure you can fund your home as well as your business. Business failure rate is staggering.

As for whether there will be any noticeable difference. Not quickly. Nothing in government is designed to move quickly. Look at the bailout plan. The speed that is moving is like light speed above the typical workings of government. Also, the president is only one part of the factor. No one knows who will have control in congress. If the congressional control switches back to the Rebubs, and the White House goes to the Dems, it will be another four years of nothing getting done.

After this bailout plan fiasco, I have decided to take a stance. Maybe it is a bad decision, it probably is, but I am voting against all the encumbants. I am tired of the government being for the politician and their special interests and against us common folk. It is time Washington understood the middle class. It is time the government was made up of middle class citizens. Average day Joe doesn't stand a chance to become a Senator or Congressman. He can't afford it.

I also think debates are a joke. I learned nothing about these people or how they plan on doing anything.

There was one question that stuck in my mind and both answers to it as well. The moderator asked what the candidates wouldn't be able to accomplish as a result of the huge Wall Street Bail out. Biden's first remark was we won't be able to double Foreign Assistance. :cussing: WHAT???? Hello, American's are suffering under huge tax burdens, out of control gas prices and over all inflation. But, yes, please, double Foreign Assistance. If their health care plan hadn't sent me running, that would have. Palin didn't even answer the question. She went on and on about nothing. So, Ralph Nader is starting to look really good these days.

I don't like Palin. I don't like her policy decisions. I wouldn't want to be her friend. She offers me nothing except fear. I know some of you are excited about the election. I am excited about the end of GWB's term. I just don't think that either of these teams are the answer.

Thanks for you insight Wolfie.... There is a college locally here I used to attend.... I may look deeper into any small business classes they may have....

Thanks :sunny:

kinda off topic... im watching C-SPAN and it has me cracking up.. REP Ron Paul just used the word dranconian in a sentence and it just struck me as funny.. I know its cspan.. I gotta take my laughs were I can.

not sure this huge bailout bill is going to pass the house..

I most always love the tone of your posts...so fiesty

I agree with you and everyone else who has posted that it is time for the middle class, hard-working citizens to be recognized. I missed the reply about doubling foreign assistance or I too would have been cussing at ole Joe. I wound up leaving the room at various times to go outside to smoke and cool off. I don't think I learned much from the debate either, other than the candidates made no bones deliberately lying to save face or to accuse the other party of the same misdoings they've participated in as well(thanks for the link, Trace!) So much for seeking and finding the truth on my part and on their part, for giving it to me. I've lost all hope at this point. I might do the pick-a-name-out-of-a-hat choice. I may have at one time considered McCain if it wasn't for that nazi woman he chose for a running mate. For that alone, I hope he loses.

Like you said, though, Wolife at least we can celebrate the end of George's reign. That alone is something to get excited about!

I kinda hope it doesn't - it will only delay the inevitable, and does nothing to correct the policies that created this mess!!! :nono:

Did anyone catch/hear Newt Gringrich on "mark-to-market" accounting? {Sarbanes-Oxley}

I don't pretend to fully comprehend the ramifications, but hearing him talk about it on the news it made total sense to me.

Again, look to the policy(s) enacted under Carter & Clinton. FORCING the banks (under penalty) to lend to those who couldn't afford it. :nono:

As to people buying in over their heads, I don't understand the "I didn't know better" defense - aren't all of our laws prosecuted on the assumption that you SHOULD have known?
