No wonder children come to dislike school and even the drop out rates are higher.

You spring a completely new curriculum on the entire school and send home boat loads of homework that takes nearly the entire rest of the day to complete when they already spent time at school from 7:40-3:30 and THEN you aren't clear on exactly what they are suppose to do on the homework.

Oh, and not sending home required books to complete homework and then the children get into trouble for not completing the pages? Come on now, do they really need this much work? At least be clear with exactly what you want them to do and send instructions! :cussing:

Off to try and go through this mystery homework again with the both of them.
 
Thank you but, for example, she didn't tell my daughter exactly what she wanted done with spelling, vocabulary, etc. Then, the book needed is password protected if you look online for help and she hasn't given the passwords out yet. She could have at least either given a password or sent the book home to answer the 3 questions on the top of her math paper correctly.

My son, he is just loaded with homework and I haven't gotten to his yet. Just finished DD's, whew.
 
OMG, Miki, there too?! That is the only part of school that drives me crazy. You nailed it to a T! New cirriculum, not allowing them to bring home school books even though you pay school fees, and tons and tons of homework. I thank my lucky stars that my sons are able to make do and keep up for the most part or they'd be left behind to fail. I can't tell you how many times a year I have to google homework stuff and I was a great student who knew my stuff! When they get sick and have to be home I panic. I'm afraid they miss will how to do a new concept or have a boatload of reading and chapter questions. Sucks.
 
I so know what you mean! Bedtime here is 8 on school nights and my son is STILL doing homework. This really ticks me off. :cussing:

are these private schools? I never knew schools had fees? I sure hope not.

Btw kaileys going to kindergarden. Ahhh my babys growing up lol. And my mil and fil want to come with us the first day of school. I wish they wouldn't. But oh well.
 
Nope, tiff, public school. It's $35 a piece for both boys and we just got nailed with football fees and pics too. I just went school shopping yesterday and today. I'm broke and pissed.

Wierd. Fees for what? Books? I thought those were free? I guess its cause your kids are older. Wow I've been out of school for a while now. 6 years.
 
I don't pay fee's unless it's for sports, booster (PTA), etc. and believe me...they are always trying to sell or get $$ for something. I have to provide all materials and extra classroom supplies (paper towels, kleenex, hand sanitizer, etc.)

My son wants to play baseball but, that is not until Feb. and it's not through the school but, it will be $100 plus pics. He doesn't get to play on the school teams until next year since he is only in 5th grade.

I have my booster/pta money sitting on the shelf. I'm joining this year and they will hear everything I have to say too. The fundraisers are also something I cannot sell. They are those catalogs with over inflated items in there. I don't have anyone here I could sell to, if they did candy bars those would sell.

I love the school, don't get me wrong but, I get a little peeved at some of the things.

What I don't understand about this new curr. is that they are teaching things to the kids that I didn't even learn until high school. The kids are too far behind to learn this stuff so fast!

We have to provide those too. Kaileys kindergarden list looks more like a teachers supply list. SaNTIZER, BABY WIPES, kleenex, etc.

And the other thing is, most adults forgot some of the school work, so they can't even help thier kids. They say kindergardeners need to know how to read, etc. I remeber nap time, play doh, recess, in kindergarden. Hmm.
 
We've always had school fees for the boys. We buy their supplies too! I was asking hubby what exactly do these school fees cover. He said the fees are to help with getting new books, stuff for the school, etc. OK, but I thought public school was free? Hubby shrugs shoulders.

One year I tried not paying them all school year :laughing: Kids didn't get their grade cards until the fees were paid. Never did that again. Oh, and don't forget to have enough lunch money on tab. If you're even short for one day they make the kids eat peanut butter and jelly. No charging, no nothing.

I think our kids go to the same school. :laughing: I have to pay 155.00 for "book fees".. I also tried not paying and they wouldnt give me their report cards so I paid.. They still kept my daughters though because of some form that wasnt filled out by the dentist that I didnt know about until the last week of school. :cussing:

we also pay for the kids to ride the bus 40.00 a month. They dont let the kids charge lunch either. Its crazy. They nickle and dime ya to death. oh, PE uniforms we gotta buy at 15.00 a kid.. school supplies.... :cry:

And the homework.. OMG! I hate it. I cant help them with the math. I cant. And they just pile it on. on day my daughter brought home 16 pages of math, front & back.. She did about 9 pages and I told her she didnt have to do the rest. She would have been up all night and thats not going to happen.

Now I remeber that from back when I was in school. And the wierd thing is, they would freeze the sandwiches.
 
I was actually thinking about you after I posted, Trace. You get hit WAY harder than any parent I know! $40 to ride tha damn bus :cussing: Outrageous school fees :cussing: And you have to buy PE unis? I'd be livid and broke :cussing:

I just shelled out $30 for football pics today and had to pay $20 last week for a practice jersey the school supplies the kids. I asked if he could use a jersey from home and they said no. No explanation, just no. I asked why and the lady said because all of the boys have to match. It's a practice jersey FFS! They ain't playin' in them! I merely said okie dokie, got off the phone and threw it out the window.

When I calmed down and became more rational I realized that I'd pay just about whatever when it comes to the boys playing sports. I just couldn't get over the fact that they wanted $20 for a jersey that the boy won't even be playing in. He will simply run around and hit things in it. And he had a perfectly good one at home and even had the same color scheme as the one I had to pay for. Yeah, the nickel and diming parents to death gets old. Either that or I'm gettin' cheap.
 
:scratch: If the kids can't bring home their school books, how are they to study for tests and do homework? Not all families have computers and internet access, if the text is on line. And of those that do have computers and internet access, very few would have a computer per child. So how do you decide who gets the computer and when and for how long. What if more than one child has gobs of homework? My grandkids schools aren't the way you have described and it is a good thing cause one only has dial up access and the others certainly couldn't afford a computer per child, the router etc necessary to allow more than one computer on line at a time. School is certainly different than when I or my kids went. Sorry you guys are having so many problems. I think I would probably in jail for murdering the superintendent, principal and teachers. diedramizer, my oldest is in junior high and he only has a few teachers that have done this since he's been in jh. The students are required to save all hand-outs and take notes that the teachers write on the board. While that helps, sometimes my son would like to go back over what they read in class that day from the book and it gets frustrating that he can't bring it/them home.

Last year he had an assignment where they had to pick a topic and do a detailed report on it. The internet was supposed to be the main source from where they gathered their info. The teacher actually sent home a note saying if parents didn't have one the kids needed to go to the library. I thought that was kinda crappy. Who cares where they get their info as long as they get it, right? We live in the middle of nowhere. Our schools and where most of the other kids live is even further out. They have an itty bitty library with one computer. Now tell me how that's supposed to work!

We are in school just down the road from you guys and I am so over all these fees already. It's only the fourth day of school. I had to buy a TI83 calculator that cost me $100.00 bucks! This is for a 12 year old mind you! Wow, maybe they will be building space ships in class, who knows. Both my daughers made the dance team and that came up to a grand total of $4,000.00. And no, that is not a typo - $4,000.00. And if they make it to Nationals in Orlando, FL it will be even more! Oh just shoot me now. Maybe they are just trying to warm us up for what it will be like when they go to college.
 
And people wonder why our kids rank so low against the world in math and science. This is a prime example of being penny wise and pound foolish.
 
Okay ~ do any of you guy have a sbdm council? If so you might want to go to a meeting. Parents have a right to voice your opinion on such things as homework and school supply lists! You do not have a choice on school fees and school bus fees ~ they will be mandated by the district so you have to take them up at a district level.

I worked with the SBDM council for 5 years and I worked as a Parent rep! One of the big things I did was make sure that we kept all of our school supply list to under $25 dollars. The teacher could ask for wipes, erasers or whatever, but if that list went over that amount then they had to split it up between the kids somehow to bring that price back down. They also had the option to put a wish list on there that the parents could get if they wanted to ~ no pressure, just a option. Parents LOVED it! We made the lists available at the end of school year so the parents also had all summer to get all supplies in case they had more than one child ~ whatever to make it easier...

As for homework ~ each school should have a homework policy written in their bylaws and available to parents ~ ask to see it. It should have a time limit set of how much homework in minutes a child by grade level can have a night. This can vary a little per child, but it is a guideline ~ I think this is a mandate in all 50 states now. If your child's teacher is going over this they can lose their job. A quick little call letting the teacher know that you know the guideline will probably do the trick without anymore trouble!

Even though you can't change the fees, schools have to give you amble time to pay. If you can't pay by the first grade card due to having more than one child in school, go to the school and let them know ~ I don't believe that they can withhold the grade cards in that case. You have to be made aware of your child's progress.

Why does school have to be a headache for the parents? We don't have school fees, but Caitlyn already has two fieldtrips lined up, plus football fees, plus I paid for pictures today that she hasn't even gotten made ~ that kills me! What if she is sick...I think it is a bad policy to pay for pictures ahead of time! They will see one 'bigger than a size 12 woman' having a hissy fit if something happens and I don't like these pictures for some reason!!
