School work

I had to get my son one of those scientific calculators also and he will be 11 next month. My mom surprised me with that one though, she sent us one that he can even use in Jr. high (next year) and maybe high school. I received a list before school let out last year and picked up most of the supplies through the summer.

You know what I heard today while going to get my car? (It's been stuck in another town since the weekend), I was told they are trying to pass a law where the kids are in school 10 hours a day 4 days a week and out on Fridays to save gas. Hmmm, ok so where is the parent time and where is the time to even do the homework? I really hope this doesn't pass.

I love the school, I really do but, these extra costs and such really do add up and the homework thing is just insane sometimes.

My son wants to be in baseball when sign up comes and I'm hoping to do that. My daughter wants to join Cheerleading but, for her age I think I can sign her up for around $60 for classes when the papers come home. I'm not sure how much sports cost in Jr. high yet, which out here 6th grade is jr. high. Since my son is in 5th, I'll sign him up with the local leagues.

I guess I should just be grateful that my children have a school to go to for an education.

fearsgirl, I don't know how you are going to do it. $4k is a LOT of money and wayyyy out of my budget. Good luck!!

And people wonder why our kids rank so low against the world in math and science. This is a prime example of being penny wise and pound foolish.

I don't quite understand, do you mean the parents or the schools?

I know that a lot of school districts are discussing this but there is one thing that is holding them up and that is the bus drivers and cafeteria workers ~ if they go to a 4 day week there is no way for them to get their 40 hours in for the full time workers and they can't afford to lose their managers and such. That is the only reason that we haven't went 4 days around here.

Hopefully gas will keep on going down, or I am afraid that more districts will start doing like Traceys is ~ charging to let the kids ride the bus!

Hey Ping!

The teachers do send home a homework guideline paper at the beginning of school. It doesn't detail the minutes but it does let me know on what days to expect homework.

As far as a council I don't know. Is that kinda like a PTA?

Nothing at all ~ each council is made up of the principal, teachers, and parents and it is their duty to do what is best for the KIDS. That is what the main objective is really about, but some get carried away and make it about the wrong things all together. That is why you have homework guidelines. Each council meets on a certain day each month and it is open to the public that always have a time to voice their opinion. You also have the right to call the parent rep. and tell them your opinion and find out what is going on. All meeting minutes are available to the public.

I would almost bet that your school has one being that you are so close to me...changes can be made, but it may take time. All the parents have to do is ban together and really get involved. It might not be easy, but it would be worth it!

I am joining the PTA/Booster club and it's really inexpensive. I want to be more involved and hopefully help make a few changes in the future. My grandmother was president of the PTA in the 50's and 60's at my elementary/Jr high school and I have her scrapbook, it is an amazing piece of school history, I love it!

If they start doing bus fee's, I'll probably drive my kids to school. We are in the country but, I can't afford $40 per child or more a month on top of all our other bills and expenses that keep coming up. I think the fee's are a bit high anyways for the gasoline costs, if you think about it and add up all of the children who are dropped off in the same area, where is that extra money going if not for gas? We do have to pay for the field trips and the bus drivers pay for those field trips. I don't mind those much, it doesn't cost a lot. Usually around $10-$15 a child to attend the event and pay the drivers/gas.

I need to drive to town tomorrow, my son has a project due on Friday that requires a posterboard. Too bad they didn't sell those at the school, they do sell everything else. I live around 20-25 miles from town, that is a lot of gas just for a posterboard. If I remembered, I could have picked one up today when I went to get my car so I am kicking myself now, lol.

I was PTA co~president for 1 year and I got royally done over by my co-president who was dating at the time and couldn't see fit to come to the meetings or do the fund-raisers and such. It was a mess! I sure didn't run again I can tell you that ~ we raised enough money to take the kids on a school wide field trip to the movies and out to eat at McDonald's that year, as well as have a picnic with the blow-up bouncers in the front of the school and we bought each child a Christmas gift that year that I personally hand labelled with their names...it took me forever to write every childs name down, but I wanted them to feel special that year.

I helped every year in PTO after that but never to that degree

I meant the schools. Penny wise and pound foolish, buying the books and not letting the kids even use them for homework. If the schools taught kids like the used to before computers etc our children would be better educated. Requiring (maybe not technically, but for all intents and purposes) parents to have computers and internet access in the home so kids can complete their home work is ludicrous since there are people who just flat can't afford it. Parents do whatever they can for their children and then someone comes along and says your tax dollars aren't enough we need for you to pay fees out the yazzoooo and when you are done paying those we need a bond levy passed that will raise your property taxes 400 - 500 a year. Then to put a guilt trip on the voters they say that this is for the education of our children who are our future. YES our children are our future, but cut the crap, teach the kids instead of having them do hours of homework. OK, I vented enough now, but I just wanted to make it clear that I am behind the parents 100%.
