How do they pick winners?

How do the judging agencies pick winners at random from the database of all entries? More importantly, When there is a sweepstakes with a Grand Prize and some lower tier prizes (First, Second, Third, etc) Do they pick the Grand Prize first and then the lower tier (working down)? Or do they pick the lower tier winners first working up to the Grand Prize?

I ask because if its like a game show or a public drawing they usually pick lower tier first to create suspense if of course the prize selection has an audience. But do they do that when its just a random pick from a database? i am really curious about this.
Thanks to anyone who may know. :)

No way of knowing for sure, since there are multiple sponors and Judging Agencies and they probably don't have a set protocol they all follow, but I "think" if the GP is a trip (or more than one trip) they "might" draw them first since so many people decline those?

I actually never thought much about it, but I also think I've seen it both ways - where people post the smaller wins {notified/received} before the GP winner does - but I do have a touch of dyslexia, so I may have backwards that!!! :crazytongue:

They normally just randomize all the entries through a computer program. There's no person actually picking them on regular sweepstakes entries.

For snail mail entries, they number each envelope (they do not open them). Then they enter the numbers into the computer program along with any online entries if both were means of entry. Then the computer randomizes for the winner. If the winner happens to be one that was mailed in, that specific numbered envelope is pulled and opened.
