Hi,
I got a notification that my daughter won a SECOND PRIZE--a Maya & Miguel DVD from the
Maya & Miguel's Latin Fun Fiesta Sweepstakes. I was trying to win the trip. They want me to send in an affidaft within 14 days or they will select a new winner. My daughter doesn't want the prize and the ARV is $9.99 . Would it be rude for me to email them and say that we don't want it? Or should I just let the 14 days expire?
What do you do when you win something that you really didn't want?

Thanks for any advice
Sandy

On this one, my husband got it notarized at our bank for free and just sent it back through regular mail. When we get it, we are just going to let whoever wants it take it. My husband leave things out at work that we don't want or can use for the taking.

Otherwise, if you still don't want it, don't send the affy back. After the deadline, they will just pick another winner.

What's the point in entering a sweep from the beginning if you don't really want it? Maybe next time you should leave those to someone who really wants the prize for a family member, friend, etc....

Just MY Opinion

This was just a minor prize. The main prize was a trip. I was just going for that myself too.

That just seems a little ungrateful to me.... I wouldn't decline a prize just because I wasn't a Grand Prize winner in that Sweepstake..... I'd be happy to have just won something from any sweep even if it wasn't the one I "really" wanted to win...

My kids love Mia and Miguel. If you don't want it, you could trade or sell it somewhere. My bank does notary for free so it doesn't matter what arv I win if I need that done. Other than that, I guess your only option is to turn it down and hope someone else is selected to receive the dvd.

Personally, I would claim prize and trade it for something I do want. In fact, that's probably what I will do since my little one is still a little too young for this. I'm still trying to figure out how he'll sign the affy since he'll just stick the pen in his mouth and eat it. Probably would want to eat the affy, too. Besides the trade forum, I'm sure it will make a good gift for a friend of your daughter if the age is right.

Are your kids in school? Do they have to give gifts at Christmas time to other students? Use it as
a gift for that student, got a niece of nephew..christmas and birthday presents is what I would use
these kinds of items for...totally up to you but what the heck if you don't have to spend money
to buy someone a gift by giving them an item you won for free...saves you that much more money.
If nothing else...donate it to Toys for Tots!!

could it be that the second prize is something larger? I'm sorry but as long as I've been doing sweeps...which is not very long to begin with, but anyways, they only send affidavits if your prize is worth more than a sertain figure because of all the liability and such. Ive won quite a few little gifts (DVD's and music) and they have never had me sign anything, they simply mail it to me and I get surprized by the gift in the mail.

Some sponsor's do require affidavits on any size prize. I have done quite a number of them before on small prizes. The IRS only requires that a sponsor make out a 1099 on all prizes $600+ to report to them. Anything under that amount is the sponsor's choice whether or not to submit one. For the most part, winners are on the honor system of reporting all of their prize wins not reported to the IRS on their tax return. It is, however, within the rights of the sponsor whether or not to require an affidavit on a smaller prize.

Affy definitely says DVD. Not the first time I've had to do an affy for a DVD. The reason I got from the last place was that you can win from them more than once in a year and if the total is > $600, they want to have affy's for all of them.

Don't foget about your local childrens hospitals. We have St Judes just down the street and they love getting donations like this. The children in the hospital can use them or their siblings staying at the Ronald McDonal house can enjoy them as well.

Last year (or was it 2006?) I had some DVDs I won that I didn't want. (One thing I got had 16 DVDs in it and I didn't like them all)

I sent some of them over to a military base in Germany that was soliciting donations for the US troops at the local hospital. Wasn't cheap to send, and I probably wouldn't do it for just one, but there are lots of places you can donate things to.

Of cource, you can just not return the affy and forget about it, too. Sometimes you just win lesser prizes then you desire and over time you develop avenues to unload the stuff you don't really want/need. My bro-in-law loves all the t-shirts I give him, and that is after keeping several for myself. And, he even passes along some that he doesn't want, and is still very happy with his haul. Every once in a while my dad gets a laugh from the stuff I mail him. Sometimes you just never know when you just might need a gift...

Happy sweeping.

Maya and miguel is a great show. It comes on Pbs, Kailey watches it. I didnt even know about that sweeps. To bad, looks like alot of people won from it. You should just claim it, and give it away as a gift......if you don't maybe one of those ZZZ members will win it.  Ok seriously, that is a good prize. So just be excited. You don't have to claim it on your taxes, they probably just want the affy to make sure you are who you say you are. Donate the dvd to a foster home, or group home. Do something good with it.

Thanks for the advice! I am new to Internet sweeping - just started in September. I used to "sweep" by mail about 7 years ago but I gave it up when I got too busy.

Sometimes I have a hard time deciding whether to enter a sweeps when I really just want the grand prize or sometimes the smaller prize is the one that I want. I entered this one because I love to travel and the grand prize was a great trip.

I think that I will claim the prize and donate it to my daughters old preschool or Toys for Tots. The other weird thing is that I received 2 winnings messages. The 1st message congratulations Johnathon. The 2nd message was for my daughter. They came at the same time but I never entered for Johnathon. So that's just strange. I will mail in for my daughter.
Thanks !!
Sandra

f you don't maybe one of those ZZZ members will win it.

Like me!! I entered and never received an email, I know they are still coming here and there so still watching my email.
