Why is expiring soon only open to Sweeps Plus members now?

I haven't been a member for a little over a year, but I have decided to reactivate my account as I am currently unemployed. I used to always enter the new sweepstakes and enter the expiring sweepstakes as well. I'm really disappointed to find that we have to pay the membership fee in order to view the expiring sweepstakes. Any idea when this started and why it was implemented?

Ken is really good about explaining site changes/giving a heads up on issues in the Announcements forum - in 2013, Ken explained why Expiring/Expired Sweepstakes Sections is now only available to Plus members - btw, this is a stickied thread in the Announcements forum :

Expiring and Expired Sweepstakes Sections are now only available to Plus members.

This change was 100% necessary to keep the sweepstakes on SA Free. We've rolled out new features and options for free since 1997 and this is no longer feasible
especially in this economy. It takes many people and costly technologies to keep the site running an updated. All the sweepstakes are still accessible on the other sections of the site.
The expiring sweepstakes section is being reserved for the Plus members who are directly supporting the site. Sorry for the inconvenience but we have to ensure the site will
be around for everyone in the future.
