What's the best computer to buy?

I know you all know computers! I'm just looking for some advice on what to buy. I tried my mom's laptop and I can't get used to not having a mouse, so I'm looking for a regular one. I just want one that's dependable and fast. I know some people reported problems with Vista....is it any better now? What are the other options? Does anyone have a computer they sware by? Thanks in advance for your help. Let's just say technology isn't my strong point :scratch:
 
:sunny: I doubt that you will get many to commit to that question. No one wants to advise on buying something and then if you don't like it, who do you blame? Not that you would do this.
My advise is to research reviews online. That's what I normally do when I am getting ready to make an electronic purchase.

Thanks, I'll check out the link. There's just something I really like about "Word of mouth". It's hard for me to understand a lot of the technical mumble jumble, I just want to know if people who own it like it and if it works good....that's good enough for me! I won't hold anyone to anything......promise :)
 
you can use a mouse with a lap top usually you add a wireless mouse and with a usb port receiver place it in an open usb port, many people do this.As far as computers go get one with enough memory usually 1 gig minimum or better more. as far as processor for speed get 2ghz or more the dual core and the quad core are only of use if you do and have a lot of applications going on at one time so the regular processor should do just fine other options on a computer are optional for if you store a lot of dvd's and cds and if you do a lot of heavy graphics. I use a multiple tower arrangement so I have IBM,COMPAQ,AND E-MACHINE computers hooked up with a switcher. pentium and athalon processors seem to work the best for most people.
 
I like the Logitech VX Revolution cordless laser laptop mouse. Just got another one because I drop them a lot :)
I'll swear by those, but that is as far as I'm going :laughing:

You guys are so funny. I checked out the link and I'm overwhwelmed by choices.....hopefully I'll just win a computer and won't have to "choose" one. My computer is 9 years old and is on it's last leg (which is broken and arthritic). Thanks for the mouse recommendations. :)

just remember that the bigger the processor the faster it can do things on the computer and the more memory it has the more things it can handle,brand is a preference and every one has there favorite but not always better ( just like cars whats better a ford sweepstakes or a Chevy ) just depends on what you need it to do.

The best waty to approach this is by knowing what you want it to be able to do - if you game, word process, IM, etc.

Do you want to be able to watch DVD's? Play CD's?

Or do you just want a basic, no-frills comp you can sweep on?

As Lee says, the processor speed and available memory help you to load pages faster, and to keep resource intensive sweeps/progs/sites from boggng you down.
 
my boyfriend is an IT guy and what he says don't say "I'm only going to email and type" as if those applications are ok on a lower end computer. Browsing the web these days actually requires a fairly good computer. Web designers assume people upgrade their systems often.Frankly you should buy the best you can afford (with out doing financing with crazy interest rates!). Buying the best you can afford is especially important if you plan on using it for a long time. Buy the latest Operating System (Windows Vista) because even XP will no longer be supported soon. Ram is extremely important and is commonly undersold. Infact if you buy a slightly cheaper computer adding more ram (fairly easy in most laptops) is always a good idea. Vista needs 2 gig of RAM (different then memory) at the very least and 3 to great.

People often complain about their computers not being able to view a certain sweeps. Often times the basic computer system (especially one low on ram) might have trouble loading a page. It could be caused by other things (like Dialup!) but having a good system is key to being able to enter sweeps.

That's my two cents from what my boyfriend has taught me. It's really up to you. Do your own research ....and I wouldn't reccommend trusting everything you hear from "box" store employees. They often aren't as educated on computers as they sound. My boyfriend frequently overhears them misinforming people and corrects them.

Thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate it. I do have trouble loading some sweeps either that or they are annoyingly slow. I know it's time for a new one, I'll take into consideration all you have said. I'm still hoping to win one!
