What's bugging me today - rural internet

Okay, so maybe I do live out in the middle of nowhere.... but I'm so frustrated about having no internet availability! Argh! How am I supposed to sweep when I can't even get online?

Okay, I'm blowing things out of proportion. I CAN get online... with dial-up. But it seems ridiculous to pay $40 for a landline phone + dial up on top of that to connect at 26K. Sooo not worth it.

Can't get an air card for my laptop through my cell company (no coverage), can't get DSL/cable, can't get satellite (we're currently not expanding in your area), can't get WISP....

What's a girl to do? I'm seriously considering moving!

Just feeling in a whiney mood tonight.

I feel your pain ~ I am on very S L O W dial-up!!! Could we have some else, yes! Will my husband let me have it ~ NO!! Cost to much. I couldn't even check on some of the Christmas presents that my girls are wanting because the pages kept on timing out today :cussing:

He did go over to his brother's house for Thanksgiving and saw how fast he was moving on the internet and let's just say that his interest was peeked. Now everyone just keep their fingers crossed for me!!!! I know that there are worse things in the world, but when you are a sweeper ~ dial-up is a PITB!!!

Awww, maybe your hubby will see the error of his ways!

For now, I get by on using wireless at the library (not nearly as comfy as sitting home in bed on the 'net, though) and logging onto what few pages I can access at work when we're slow (like tonight... I work nights, so I post at odd hours LOL)

When hubby was in rehab, the kids and I lived in a tiny apartment in town. It was a hellhole, but I could get cable there! Looking back, it was almost worth the dismal living conditions just for the cable...

I live way off out in the woods 20 miles from the closest store and I thought I would never get high speed internet and then 2 years ago a company came in and offered DSL out in the woods where I live. Made me a happy camper and it's no way I would go back to dial up!

It's 54 dollars a month right now but come March of 2008 it will go down to 29 dollars a month. And still 54 dollars a month is cheaper than what I was paying for dial up because I had to have a 2nd phone line which was extra money, area calling and 30 a month for AOL dial up.

Hopefully you will get high speed offered to you before long.

 I feel your pain girls. I was on dial-up for several years. If I had to be on dial-up again there is no way I would even consider sweeping. Lucky for me DH wants everything as fast as he can get it. I guess having those fast motorcycles around was good for something!

I, too, live in a rural area. Fortunately, I lived close enough to (within three miles, as the crow flies) a major internet provider/phone company...so I got to switch from dial-up to dsl a few years ago. I couldn't return to dial-up...omg! I only pay $29.99/month for the service, and I am grateful to have it.

Hopefully for you, either satellite internet or a service company will expand into your rural area and allow you access to dsl.

I moved to the country last year and I am from California. I had cable and DSL in California and now I use dial up. The company I go through is always down sometime during the day and yet they don't even prorate customers for the downtime. (Bellsouth). A few times in the last few months they had been down for a couple days at a time but, they want to be paid on time or they have no problems turning you off until you do.

I wish my speed was quicker, it's so slow but, I am grateful that I have internet.

What satellite company did you call? Not expanding in your area was the answer I got from Wild Blue, but Hughesnet is apparently available everywhere.

Yeah, I too know how you feel. My dial-up is at least as fast as it can go...but still...that's slow! What sucks even more is that I work for a telecom equipment company that MAKES the equipment that provides high-speed service(s). I could get my phone company the equipment they need to make it happen, but they won't shell out the money!!
