Well I got notification today that I am the grand prize winner in the Ulta Beauty #ThisIsHowILip Sweeps. ARV is $1429. Unfortunately, I think I may be turning this one down because I cant see myself paying out $500+ in taxes on lip products, I was really hoping for the second place win which has an ARV of $85 of lip products. I am grateful though to SA and Ulta for this great sweepstakes!

I know what you mean. Sometimes all I want is one of the lesser prizes, and not an expensive grand prize that I can't use. :/ But congrats on winning!
 
Please check on tax amount before you decline. A few years ago, I won a treadmill valued at $1499, and taxes were about $200.
 
Ask them if you can have the 2nd place prize instead - they probably will accomodate you especially if you say you can't afford the taxes on the grand prize. GL!
 
Congrats to you! And yeah, I'd ask for the lesser prize. Maybe the 2nd place prize person would LOVE the grand prize. What's the worst that can happen, they say no? lol
 
sandymommy, thanks for the advice....yeah the past 2 tax yrs my wins typically affect my return by about 38%, last yr I won a small trip valued at $1600 so I guesstimated at 38% and saved this prior to tax time, it ended up being pretty darn close to that # unfortunately...I usually accept most prizes, even high valued, because I can usually sale other wins that I don't really need to make up for the taxes for wins I do want, but not so sure about this one..still deciding though!?!?!?. :(
 
Thanks everyone for the comments!! If I decline I am definitely asking for a lesser prize, I didn't think to do that before, but your right...all they can say is no. :) HAPPY SWEEPING EVERYONE!
 
Congratulations!!! On your win! Might be good to claim the prize--- I actually have thrown away stuff before, alas, only to wish I had it.---I mean never know you could sell it right?
 
I completely understand turning down a prize because of tax consequence. Sometimes I enter travel sweeps, hoping to win the lesser prizes. Congrats on winning though! It's always a fun moment and builds up momentum to keep entering, right?

It's an awesome prize! Congrats!! if it were me, I would keep my favorites and sell some if need be. I also resell items from thrift stores to make ends meet, something to think about.
