This has been a long two weeks. The kids went back to school yesterday...

My neighbor (who had his tree fall in my yard and on my power line) Is the one who ended up getting our power turned back on yesterday. He came over and asked me what the hold-up was and I told him that I didn't know. We had called and had turned in all of our paperwork so we were just waiting. Less than 30 minutes later there was a KU truck sitting in my driveway. Come to find out, he had the KU guys transmission down in his garage and I guess he threatened to hold it hostage ~ lol! I am so thrilled to finally have power though ~ and HOT water!

My niece works at a local elementary school and when she got back to work today they had a little boy come up to them and tell them that he was hungry. Come to find out during the whole time that they were out of school (two weeks now) they didn't have heat and had run out of food and had been eating dog food to survive. I am feeling pretty guilty today...I just don't see how in this day and age a family can slip through the cracks like that :cry: I know I am tired and probably over emotional right now, but that story has just broken my heart in so many ways. I just know that he wasn't the only one in this county. I can't imagine going to bed cold and hungry...
 
There are some people who literally just shop for what they need from week to week. Then when something like this happens, and they can't get out of the house, they run out.

This happened to me when I lived in Pennsylvania. We got a big snow storm. Then on the third day, it all turned to sleet all day long. Trees were uprooted and power lines came down all over the place. They had to shut down roads, and you couldn't get out for school or work let alone shopping; but I always have a warehouse of food, supplies, and water--can't run out!LOL

Fortunately, the electric company for that area was big and had more than enough crews to send out to make the repairs. We were without power for just three days. If we lived further into Pennsylvania, the boon docks, I'm sure it would have been longer.
 
We have Family Resource Centers in each school set up to help families with stuff just like that. The only thinks is that they were pretty much immobile after this storm. If someone could have gotten through to someone then they could have gotten help.

They said that the lines to take showers were huge at the schools today. We still have SO many people without power and water that it is just sad. They were giving out clean clothes to the ones that needed them today also. Both of the girls said that they got absolutely nothing done at school today. Today was about checking on the welfare of all the kids ~ making sure that they had all of the basic needs that the schools could help provide or get.

One of our main high school's parking lots is still being used for the 'tent' city for all the linemen that are here from out of state. It is just amazing at the manpower that is in this county trying to help get our powerlines back up and working!
 
We were fortunate to live by the borderlines of New York and New Jersey. So, there wasn't a problem getting the help. I think the electric company servicing my area anyway was out of New York.

See, this is where baby wipes come in very useful. We were using those for cleaning up. That's if we could take our clothes off long enough! Brrrrr!LOL

I wish I had known about that powder stuff you use to clean your hair with. I probably would have had that on hand too!

Actually, a generator would have been nice!LOL

We keep wipes in the house and all vehicles at all times. I love them! If I have a big enough purse they are in there also ~ lol!

Where can you buy that powder stuff for your hair? My grandmother had a really hard time during this power outage also because of the cold water trying to wash her hair and that might put her mind at ease. I had heard of it before, but does it really help?

No. Our county and the neighboring county ~ Hopkins are having so much trouble getting the fallen trees and powerlines up. Of course, all of the major roads are mostly clear, but the buses can't get down quite a few of the backroads around here. Hopkins County wouldn't even send their kids back to school yet, and to be perfectly honest I am suprised that ours did. We are still under a boil water advisory and they HAVE to provide each and every student with bottled water then they are having to use disposables in the kitchens because they can't wash the dishes in the washer. They just got in to big of a hurry around here!!

We were on top of a mountain. So, around the school area in the valley, they were able to get the kids to school; but, even if the roads were open then, they weren't able to get those buses up our roads.

I don't know why they just didn't close the school. There were barely any children there anyway.
 
Believe it or not attendance was excellent in the county yesterday. I really thought that it would be terrible, but I think all the kids were ready to get back to a somewhat 'normal' routine. Now they have to decide if they are going to push back the closing date of school to June 4th or take Spring Break away from the kids. They declared this an emergency so they could write these two weeks off, but they won't. Our school superintendent doesn't believe in missing time.
 
I was just going to ask you about that!

The kids all think it's great to get snow days until reality sets in, and they have to go to school longer at the end of the year!LOL

It was funny ~ I turned on the power ~ took one look at the house and wanted to turn it back off :laughing: I could cry. The house is a wreck :nono: We have been doing the best that we could, but I think my kids are blind as bats without lights.
 
Hi ping, so glad you are back, and so sorry for all the hard time you went though. thank God that you and your family are well. As far as the house being a mess, my offer for a vacation on the farm still stands, hire someone to clean the mess and leave. lol . Just remember and never forget, don't bring the cat until he or she has a tomato bath. :tongue2: :laughing: :laughing:
