A few years ago one of the local TV stations was hosting a sweepstakes in partnership with Wegman's supermarket nearing the Christmas holiday.
According to the rules back then, from those that entered there would be 1 winner picked each week and receive a $100 Wegman's gift card.
It lasted about 10 weeks, so there were 10 winners.
Again according to the rules, the name of 1 of those 10 weekly sweepstakes winners would be picked again at the end of the sweepstakes and awarded an additional prize of a $1,000 Wegmans gift card.
My phone rang one day... it was the local TV station saying I had won the grand prize of the $1,000 Wegmans gift card. We agreed when to meet at the TV station and claim my prize.
But I knew the rules and was wondering to myself; "How did I win??? I wasn't a weekly prize winner."
So I was puzzled as to how I won. So I still went to the TV station.
I shook hands with various folks at the TV station and they took my picture.
The fellow awarding me the prize said; "How lucky that you won twice. The weekly prize and the grand prize."
I said something like; "Weekly prize? I don't know about that."
I think when they saw my awkward reaction, they probably suspected they might have made a mistake in picking me as the grand prize winner since they noticed I didn't know anything about winning a weekly prize. I never was a weekly prize winner in their sweepstakes.
They still awarded me the grand prize on the spot. Ten $100 gift cards ($1,000) to Wegman's.
I'm assuming someone at the TV station not remembering the rules, just drew another name from everyone that had originally entered.
I gave most of the gift cards to my parents for Christmas that year.
