Question for those of you who have won trips.

Hello,

I won a trip out of town which includes airfare and hotel stay. My question is about the hotel stay. Did those of you who have won hotel nights where the sponsor paid for the trip, have to use your own debit card for a hold in case of incidentals? I know normally, when I stay at a hotel that I am paying for myself, hotels sometimes will place a hold on my card in case of damage, eating out of the mini bar etc. I also know they will return it back to you if you do not have any damage or extra costs etc. I have never won a trip and they are telling me that I will need to have a card placed on the room and they will place a hold for one night's room and tax until I check out even though they are paying for it. Is this normal practice for sponsors?

Thanks so much for any info!

:sunny: Congrats on getting a trip win. I have had it both ways. On some I needed to use a credit card for incidentals not covered and on some I didn't need one. You could ask the sponsor if it will be required. Most sponsors are real good at this type of information.

Thank you Delimama66 and Pmeek! I feel better knowing that this can happen and is normal for trip wins. And thanks for the congrats! This is my first trip win ever and I am super excited :sunny:. Wishing you both fantastic wins

CONGRATULATIONS on your trip out of town!!!! How far out of town? A neighboring farm? Far far away? Over seas? Are you going to be abducted by aliens and take a trip to Blorginsterf? Oops! I reread your letter. "Includes airfair" So, we know it's not a neighboring farm.
Well, wherever you go, have fun!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations on your win!

When I won my trip to Las Vegas from Versa Vice, I had to leave a credit card upon check in. Of course, nothing was charged to it.

Thanks Crazyjulie013, Tacehtxilef, Amy Shulkusky for the info and the congrats! Wishing you three a trip win too! :sunny:

We recently went to NYC for a Conde Nast win - total headache. Despite having a printed confirmation in hand of our reservation from Conde Nast, the hotel said that they had only made the reservation and not paid for it, so we had to give them a cc# just to have somewhere to stay for the night. It was a long (holiday) weekend, so nobody was answering calls or e-mails at Conde Nast. We finally convinced the hotel manager NOT to charge our card for 48 hours until we could get in touch with Conde Nast, and they didn't get back to us until Tuesday afternoon when our stay had been Saturday night.

I would also advise you to ask for a copy of your bill when you check out to keep for your tax records along with any other bills that are being picked up by the sponsor (restaurants, entertainment, salon, etc.) - the ARV that Conde Nast sent us for our taxes was for thousands (yes, THOUSANDS) more than the actual value of our trip was, but we wouldn't have known that & would've paid a lot in taxes for no reason if we hadn't asked for copies of the bills from each place.

For the NEXT trip win:

When you win a sweepstakes prize, you are only required by the IRS to report the fair market value (FMV), not the sponsor's approximate retail value (ARV); but how do you go about finding out what the FMV is and how do you handle the difference on your taxes? Find out here.

I am so sorry that happened to you! That is very stressful and I want to avoid that so I am going to call the hotel and make sure they paid it. I have most of the info for tax purposes but there's a few I won't be able to get until I am on the trip. Thanks for this valuable info :sunny:! Wishing you many wins !
