I won first prize which is a hat and a pool float from the dinner in the swamp sweepstake from the history channel but they require my social security number. Is that safe to provide?

Are they requiring you to complete an affidavit? Is the where they want the SS#?

Wow.. for a HAT and a pool float? It's safe to give it the History channel.. but... why? I get so mad when they want THAT info for a piddling prize. SO not needed. You have to provide it for larger prizes, for tax purposes, uncle sam demands their pound of flesh. But for a few bucks? I do not understand that. I myself passed up a 25$ prize from a win who wanted the notarized affidavit and my driver's license number for it.. too invasive for 25 bucks, NO reason for it at all.
It's up to you- you want that hat and dollar toy bad enough?

I agree with destiny907, it seems excessive for a hat and pool float. Congrats on the win tho.

ealeksandra - a sponsor can require an affidavit for *any* prize.

Usually they will have prize(s) over $600 that they *have* to get an affidavit for, and they use the same form for lesser prizes. This is where communication comes in - sometimes you can get a sponsor to agree to less; ie no affy, or not notorized, etc.

If they won't budge? It's left to you to decide if it is worth the effort/$$$/info required. I forfeited a t-shirt win over a required notarized affy once!
