Hi
I got a letter from United Global Award Inc, that said I was a winner of an on-line sweepstakes, which I could have entered, but I don't remember for sure. Anyway, they sent me a check for $4,650 to enable me to pay the governmant applicable tax fees. The letter said the tax amount of $2875.00 will be paid directly to my tax agent by a money gram located in all Wal Mart stores. I called the number and my "Claim Analyst" said all I needed to do was deposit the check and then call him back and he would give me my tax agents name, etc. I've heard of these kind of letters but this guy didn't ask me to send any money, so how do I know if it's legit or not? Any suggestions? The guy wouldn't give me the banks address or phone number. Thanks

If you dought that this is a scam, take it to your bank and see if they will hold it until it clears. Tell them you think it may be a scam.
My sister got one of those in the mail last year. The bank info checked out because they were forged/copied from an actual check/account. They want you to cash it at your bank or put it in your account, and send them money. They get your money and when the bank gets the check back they will take the amount of the bad check out of your account. Luckily she didn't fall for it.
I wonder about some of the sweeps listed on these sites because she got hers right after she started sweeping just like you. Nothing against SA, I am sure they aren't aware of it or they would take it off.
I have been getting lottery winner notifications from Africa, UK, Italy, and every other country on this planet, Sometimes up to 15 emails a day. I don't know where they are coming from or what list I am on, but I started emailing them back telling them to take me off the mailing list, I"M RICH! and I have won the lottery 126 times just this month alone!

 So sorry to hear that someone tried to scam you! Luckily, you have received good advise from the SA members. Don't let that discourage you from entering sweeps here though, there are many legitimate prizes to be won and I just know that you will get one soon! Best of Luck to you!

I am so sorry you have been a target of these scams. I receive the emails often but, luckily haven't received any checks by mail yet.

I have gotten several of those. I usually just trash them. I have heard of some people cashing them but in the end the bank always takes the money back. Best thing to do is just trash it or perhaps turn it over to your local FBI office.

Yes it is a scam! You will hear of a lot more of them around the holiday season. Don't cash that check ~ turn it over to someone that can investigate it and warn others to watch out for the same thing. I just saw a story on the local news the other night where an elderly lady did this and ended up paying her taxes out of her own money, then lost it and didn't have the money from the check either.

oOOOOooh : X we all have to be on the look OUT for this kinda scams. Usually you can just tell SCAM with any sweeps experience and ALWAYS have your BANK check your CHECK before you deposit a unknown check or SWEEPS check and 9 out of 10 bank girlies can tell you in 12 minutes a BONG bing bam, BOOM SCAM. Keep on SWEEPING HUN here on this site is always ligit most of the time. I believe this SA team checks all out but KEEP your common sense awake & your first instinct is usually correct. Also ask a MOD here onthis SITE like Johnny, SWEEPY , M3 ect They usually can tell you ALSO if its a bad egg they have seen . More sweeps   Keep smiling hun... I also HATE when others play with peoples emotions

When I received a check and the letter informing me that I was a winning looser at Powerball I was suspicious because I dont play it. Never have, so how could they pick me as a winning looser?

They sent me a check drawn on MAZUMA credit union for 4,800.00.
I contacted Mazuma to verify the validity of the check and was informed of a large number of calls on this same scam coming through.

I am adding this check to the scams file I have. This file contains checks totaling in excess of $80.000.00 that I have received in less than 1 year.

Man are these guys good... I almost fell for it... Good thing I searched the internet about scams before doing this thing...
The letter instructs me to call the area code 647 number (Goes to Toronto) and speak with a Ken Williams and to be sure to mention a code number to make sure I'm protected against any scams... LOLOL...
The Check is quit convincing and is for the amount of $4625.75 and is drawn on Wescom Credit Union out of Pasadena, CA. I went to their website and they exist, but it is after hours to contact anyone there. Will call them tomorrow, as well as the USPS and the FBI. I'll bet they are successfully scamming thousands of people.
