NEVER EVER open any email you aren't 100% sure you know who sent it.
Heck, I don't even open those I'm sure of - I always double check & look for red flags by right clicking on the unopened email selecting PROPERTIES and selecting DETAILS then MESSAGE SOURCE.
You can then usually see (unless it is all HTML/code) what is in the email, and if it is legit or not.
If you determine it is junk/spam/scam, hi-light the email and select (from the top MESSAGE, then you will get a drop down menu - select Block Sender. It will take a minute or so, and ask you to confirm. This will send future emails from that sender straight to your trash.
FYI - just OPENING an email can infect you!!!
I was told to NEVER have the preview pane (in Outlook) on:
if you have the preview pane on in Outlook, or Outlook Express, you DON'T have to open the email to get infected - so you need to close that ASAP.
Click on View, then Layout. UNcheck the preview pane box and hit OK (if you hit apply, you will still have to hit OK)
I always right click questionable emails, and select PROPERTIES to see who it came from and the body of the email before I block the sender/domain.
99% of the spam I get is automatically dumped into the trash & I add the new ones so they will go in there too.
