: Kittens
You know, I understand where you are all coming from. But, we are the responsible pet owners. They are more concerned with the ones who are not.
I don't know where you all live, but many people in my area consider cats disposable. I met a woman that let her cats breed and then would keep two kittens until they were adult, let them breed, keep kitten..... I was sickened. What made the situation worse is she just kicked the cats out onto the street. Never did she consider spaying and/or neutering. What is worse, the local SPCA has free spay/neuter programs.
I have, within the last 4 years adopted 2 cats and 2 dogs. One dog came from a shelter. I have to tell you that I was less than pleased with the lack of attention they paid to checking me out. One came from a rescue group and I jumped through so many hoops to get him. He was disabled and they wanted to make sure I was able to care for him. In the process, the foster Mom and I became great friends and are still in touch. I was impressed with how important they considered each dog placed in their care.
One of my cats came from the SPCA. She had been adopted about 10 days before I adopted her. Her new owner paid $200 for her from the SPCA and brought her home. 3 days later, she was picked up as a stray again, her spay incision infected. When the SPCA called the owner (She was chipped) they asked how she was doing. The woman said great. The CAT WAS IN THE SHELTER. They let me adopt her for $25.00 because she had already been paid for. Again, in spite of her difficulties, they did not check out my references.
Then, last year, someone's disposable cat found its way into my basement. I put her back outside and she wouldn't leave. I called the SPCA, gave them a description and a picture. No one claimed her and she now lives a pampered life here.
My lengthy point, checking out pet owners is actually a good thing. We know we are good people who will spoil the heck out of our pets. They are entrusted with the care of the animals. They don't know us. Is it better they take us at face value, or would a little hassle to us be worth it if it saves one cat or dog from suffering from illness, neglect or abuse.
Just my thoughts.
By the way, June is national Cat adoption month. Check out different shelters in your area for deals. Many shelters are beyond full with kittens this time of year and offer reduced adoption fees... Also, pet stores may have kittens available for a small feel $20 - $40.00.
Cats can breed by the time they are 4 months old. Try to get the spayed or neutered before then.
