I have a 10 month old son, who has a cold. Nothing major, just sniffles and a cough - no fever. Poor little guy has snot running down his face and I can do nothing for him except use the ball sucker, which makes him more miserable. He hates that thing! When he sees me coming with it he runs away crying (yes he is walking already!).
They took cold medicine for infants off the shelves for a couple of reasons. Apparently, they claimed that the meds were ineffective and that parents were not giving the correct dosage, thus endangering their children.
There are a couple problems with this:
1. I also have a 10yr old daughter. She got colds too, as children often do, and I gave her cold medicine. If it did not seem to help, I got a different brand that did. There were meds out there that worked wonderfully and gave her relief... what the hell are they talking about?!? If it hadn't worked, I would not have medicated her! I'm not some parent who is just going to dope up my kid for no good reason (although, it might have been tempting during my son's 3 month bout with colic! 3 whole months of a screaming, inconsolable baby is no joke and you can't really understand unless you've been through it). I know that cold medicine would help him now, even if it just let him nurse more comfortably.
2. I am a little OCD. Who the hell gives medicine to themself, let alone their child, without reading the dosage instructions! Why am I and countless others being punished for another's stupidity? The, "some people screwed up and thus ruined it for all of you" argument just doesn't fly with me. I am a fairly well-educated, grown woman and I don't need to be treated like I can't be trusted because someone else made a mistake. That's one of the problems with our society, government protecting dummies from themselves... but I digress.
Now I feel better that I've had my little rant but I guess my buddy will just have to get over it on his own. Look out, little guy, here comes the ball sucker again!
