Identity Theft and Sweepstakes Entries

With all the information needed to enter a sweepstake (n/a/ph#/email address), are any of you concerned about identity theft? I've been sweeping for a couple years now (no win bigger than a $100 gift card and they are few and far between), however, lately I've become concerned about it.

Do you give real name/birthdate/ph # when entering? Maybe just first intial? I know correct address is needed for deliveries but isn't birthdate just to confirm you are old enough, does it matter what date is used?

Anyone working for a sweepstakes company or a 3rd party now has basic information they can use for fraudulent credit cards etc.

Am I worrying for no reason?

Thank you for your input.

I always give all correct info. I don't want to give them any reason to dq me. I think most of the info you give them is readily available on the internet anyway. Just check your credit report frequently if you are concerned.

A few years ago, I had used a check to pay for something. The person receiving the check used my account to pay their bills. They drained $4K out of my account. I discovered it when I had a check bounce. All they needed was the routing number and account number off the check and they were in business.

I am more worried about people that have access to my financial info screwing up than with the info I am giving when entering sweepstakes. Besides, some wins require confirmation of your info.

I wouldn't worry about sweeping.

:nono: Im always CONCERNED about it and SO should all of YOU. When a idiot does damage to your credit it takes YEARS to clear up RED if not a life time. Make sure you have placed on your three now FOUR credit reporters a request to notify you if any account is being opened in your names of any kind . Transunion, Experian, Equifax & trucredit .com RED hun.. The loosers LOOK just for your type... No credit... low key... They cant damage another who has 20 credit cards out but creditors are willing to say HEY RED needs to get her credit number higher... Lets issue her a card or whatever whoever it is in your name.,Im very upset the companys will not let us use PO boxes for sweeps with maybe some secret identity to know it is us. TRUE story girls a FEW years back in the sheriffs room chatroom AOL I sent another chattter a check who was down as far as she could go . THE internet & the chatroom seemed to be her life so I agreed to help so her electric would not be turned off. She turned my check into 12 times more than I had written. Lucky me BANK caught on to the fraud but you have to be so careful. Others have NO troubles hurting YOU if they get the chance & advantage. Ps by the way CREDITREPORT.COM has a sweeps/ instant win both right now if you sign on for a free 30 day trial.11.95 after 30 days for one reporter & 24.95 for all three reporters. I check mine weekly now.

It does concern me, but not to the extent that I'm gonna put false information on a entry. Almost all the information they ask for can easily be found online or other ways. I check my credit report frequently, as well as my bank account. I once had someone get hold of my banking info and took approximately $600.00 out with in 5 minutes in $100.00 increments. Fortunately my bank caught this unusual activity and put a hold on the account and called me. I had all my money replaced within 24 hours. I love Wachovia...they were great during this upsetting time. I believe they got my account number from doing transactions online, so I beefed up my internet security, and have had no more problems...knock on wood. I take precautions, not I'm not gonna become paranoid over it. Your suggestion for a notification if any accounts are open is dead on!!

I've been online sweeping for ten years now and have always given the correct information. I never had a problem. Also, giving false information violates the rules you are agreeing to.

You have to be more concerned with dishonest employees that handle your credit card and bank information.

 Dont be paranoid JUST be aware  I only know of ONE time in me 11 years online of a CHATTER -COP type murder where they went to the females home address. They found her address online/ killed her . If his or hers shirt does not SAY PCH at my DOOR with balloons IM gonna HURT someone. lol lol lol

We moved recently and my new home insurance agent asked if I wanted identity theft insurance. For $25 a year it covers any attorney fees related to straightening out the identity theft. I never knew this insurance existed, but for $25 a year, you might want to look into it.
I am happy to say we haven't needed to use the insurance, but it does put my mind at ease when giving out my info.

I love the fact that the dude got caught by his (mis)spelling-if you are going to murder someone...always use spell check!

:cussing: Jerry Cassaday was a AWESOME cop ( marshal) who was by some curse addicted to alcohol like alot of cops who have a hard time dealing with everyday slime & loosers & tramps online like SHAREE Miller who are bold face liars and dont care who they HURT. She took advantage of a awesome man when he was down as far as he could get. If LEFT alone he could of recovered and possible returned to a department with treatment ( another out of state department). His mis spelling was a copy of what SHE wrote emailed to him. He wrote down what SHE sent him. RIP JERRY 2/11 Some of us you were a true awesome man & friend

Jimmie and I had our Discover card stolen from a bookstore at a local mall several years back. I had went in and bought my sister a book on McDonald toys (of all things ~ lol) and I knew exactly where it had to be taken from ~ why, because it was the only time we used it ~ EVER!!

When our bill came it had the book on there and then two dozen (call-in)roses and a couple of other charges. Added up to $99.-. I called Discover immediately to let them know what had happened, they told me to make a written report and send it in, which I did that day. They had the persons address where the flowers were delivered to, a phone number, our statements, and a signed affy from me and my husband. They took the charges off our bill pending investigation. We never heard anything else until about three months later when we got a bill (again we hadn't used it)and the charges were on there again! Once again, I call the office and talk to someone about the charges, and they said that after an investigation that they couldn't prove that we didn't make those charges. I had a fit! I told them that I didn't make those charges, my husband didn't make the charges, and that NOONE had permission to charge anything to our credit cards EVER!!! I told them that they best be finding something to do because I was willing to find a lawyer if I had to to fight this.

We spent the better part of a year fighting with Discover to clear our bill and our credit. We finally got it done, but it was a pain ~ we cut up our Discover cards and we will never use them again! Other people I've talked to said that they didn't have to go through anything like that with Discover~ urghhhhhhhhhh!!!! I sure don't want to go through anything like it again!

When I went to Saudi Iraq crap with military reserves PING someone bought a TRUCK in my name with a credit card & it took me 3 years to prove to the three credit reports it was NOT mine. I didnt BUY it, DIDNT order it DIDNT anything it. I was out of the USA. Identity theft online and OFF sucks :error:

Some good advice about online purchases & credit cards. Only use one card for all you online purchases. Check the bill every month. Another good idea for online items is to purchase one of the Visa/Mastercards that are prepaid and you can add more money every month. This way if someone takes the number, there is only a limited amount on the card.

Paypal also has a new gadget that you can get for $5.00 that will issue a personal ID number right there at your house. My niece carries it in her purse, and she is the only one that can buy with her paypal account now ~ she has a way to verify if it was her or not. Pretty neat if you ask me!

Gonna get me one! They do cost, but I think it will be worth it!

Those prepaid Visa cards rock :headbang:. Every month I get one of those and use it to buy an Amazon GC online and that is how I make my Amazon grocery purchases. Which sounds convoluted but it works. :crazytongue:
I never thought I'd be buying raisins off the internet...
