I turned down Good Housekeeping grand prize

no transportation... it is NYC... u don't really need any... there are subways everywhere and buses if you can't spring for cab fare if they don't inlcude it... as long as u don't have to go into harlem or the south bronx or lower east side type of places the subways r fine... I am from there and have traveled em all extensively...incl. to all the places above.. I just dont recomend those areas...
Hope it works out for you..thats a shame to miss such a grand prize win...

Despite what some may think, you can eat and get around New York City very cheaply. Subways are easy to understand and get around on and so are buses; and you can eat great food dirt cheap too if you do your homework like search "New York City Cheap Eats". That goes for shopping too. You do your homework, you would know where to shop very frugally in New York City.

I think you were too hasty in assuming how much your out-of-pocket expenses would be in determining not to take this trip.

We've won about eight trips so far including to New York City (ground transportation instead of airfare), and all of them ended up costing less than half of the stated ARV (approximate retail value). Only once or twice the sponsor forgot to readjust the ARV to the FMV (fair market value) but did so after we brought it to their attention.

Wow! Sorry to hear you turned it down...I live not to far from NYC so I did not bother to enter. Btw, for future references, some posters are right about NYC...real easy to walk it and subway is very convenient so no cabs needed..concerning food...tons and tons on cheap eats, inexpensive entertainment and happy hours.

Someone posted about winning Honolulu...definitely go! Again I found Honolulu very inexpensive for activities and dining out. You can purchase an entertainment guide before you go, there are many kiosks to pick up coupons and even kiosks to sit at a timeshare(if you have time & don't mind this) where you listen to there spiel and you get free or super-discounted activities. Plus, I negotiated with some of the catamaran people and got super inexpensive sunset cruise with drinks included. There is Pearl Harbor...very sobering experience. My trip was fantastic(did not win this)... Plenty to do, plenty to see! Enjoy your trip!

What I don't get is why people feel the need to kick people when they are down?

Trip sweeps are tough - sometimes there are lower tier prizes I would love to win, but I have no desire to win the trip, so I have to decide if it's worth the risk.

For those that do want to win a trip, sometimes the realities hit them when they beat the odds and win - life happens, and what worked in your head 2 months/a year ago when you entered, suddenly won't work {dates/lack of cash/etc.} so you can't make it work.

Then you post where you think others will understand... :nono:

Congrats, sorry you had to turn it down. Just surprised you didn't read the rules before you entered. Best wishes for a great win!

Amy, I agree with you. For the OP, sorry you had to turn it down. Remember, this forum is filled with really great people who can give you information that is useful to sweeps/taxes, etc. Maybe next time you win something (and it will come soon!) you can post something to ask about the details before you answer the sponsor either way?

That way, maybe people can give you lots of tips on how to make it work, and how to have a great time with it.

There is actually a sweep going on right now, where the GP is a trip to a NASCAR race. I don't follow NASCAR, so I don't really want the GP, but some of the lower prizes are cash, laptops, etc. I would love those!

Good luck with your future wins!
