HUGE Tax Problem

Ok fellow Sweepers, I have a huge tax problem. I won a trip to Miami January 2, 2014 and planned on going Nov. 1st 2014. However, due to buying a house we didn't end up going on the trip. But Helloworld and the sponsor sent me prize money that would have been used for the trip minus the plane tickets that were non refundable. I received all my prize money and gift cards by the second week in November 2014. By March 2, 2015 I sent Helloworld an email stating I never received a 1099 misc form for my taxes and they replied stating it was sent out Jan 30th, 2015. So I assumed because we had moved maybe that's why I never got the 1099 misc form and had them give me the total arv and filing info so I paid my taxes for my prize on my 2014 taxes. However, at the end of Feb. 2016 I received a 1099 misc form for this prize to filed with 2015 taxes. I have emailed Helloworld and they took two weeks to send me the following:

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your patience. We sincerely apologize for the delay and assure you that we have carefully reviewed your inquiry.

We can confirm that, as your prize was fulfilled in the 2015 calendar year, the 2015 1099-MISC form you received is correct. Unfortunately, the information provided to you via this email thread on 3/2/2015 was incorrect. Our team did not file this information with the IRS for the 2014 calendar year.

As a result, you will need to file your 2015 taxes using the form you received. You will also need to amend your 2014 taxes accordingly. We suggest that you consult your tax advisor for further assistance. We are terribly sorry for this inconvenience, Ashley.

Regards,
HelloWorld Customer Care

***I feel they have made the mistake but instead of dealing with it they have put it on me. Even though I have sent them numerous emails from them dealing with the win back in 2014, they still say this. I have no idea what to do. I would just amend my 2014 and 2015 taxes but I know I'm right and it's crazy that they won't admit they are wrong. WHAT SHOULD I DO????

Ashley - I'm pretty sure HelloWorld [eprize] can't [not won't] do anything if you've submitted the win to the IRS on your 2014 taxes - you have to deal with the IRS and a tax advisor [or research it & do it yourself] to amend your 2014 taxes to avoid paying taxes again on your 2015 taxes

Amy - Not sure if you don't understand. The prize was received in 2014 and they should have submitted a 1099 misc form for my prize in 2014 not 2015. However, they are claiming I received my prizes in 2015. They have made a mistake not me. I sent them emails between us from October 2014 stating I was receiving my prizes within two to three days so they are looking into it again. It is their responsibility to correct this when it is their error not mine. They need to fix it on their end, not mine. I'm not saying they need to amend my taxes but they do need to amend the 1099 misc form for 2015 and fix it to 2014.

ashleyh8584, I think I do understand & I totally agree with you that it's not fair what HelloWorld [eprize] did here.

AFAIK, the IRS [a gov't bureaucracy] won't care or listen & will expect their cut *unless* you file an amended 2014 return to go with your 2015 return - a tax advisor would know the specifics.

Hopefully {for you} If any other member has had this experience, maybe they will know more & see/post to this thread.
