How to know a win is legit?

Ok I received 2 emails one saying I'm the grand prize winner of HBCU HOMECOMING CHALLENGE Sweepstakes. The prize is a $500 gift card.
The second email says I was the weekly winner of HBCU HOMECOMING CHALLENGE Sweepstakes. This is a $250 gift card.

Sounds great I do remember the sweepstakes. The email has my first name on it but not my last. It doesn't say what type of gift card just gift card. And the affidavit ask for my social security number.

Is there a way to check? Is asking for social security number normal?
 
I once had to give my social security # & get an affidavit notarized (went to the bank to do it in my case) all just for a 100$ gift card. I felt I had to because there was not enough time for correspondence back and forth to see if I had to. I also googled their address before I mailed the affidavit back to make sure it was right address and it wasn't.lol So I fixed the address before I sent it. in that particular case. I definitely WAS NOT sending my private info to just anyone you know.

If the sender looks legit I usually google senders it probably real but two emails is a little strange but maybe & HOPE you won 2x's tho!!
 
Thank you. I did see when Googling that prizes over $600 do need your social security number but since it's 2 different wins under $600 and I have to fill out my social for both I was a bit confused. The twitter of this contest had over 10K followers and the prize matches with the contest so I'm going to cross my fingers and hope I just won Christmas money.

The over $600 is for tax reporting - some sponsors will ask for an affy & SSN for a t-shirt - yes, I declined that win, lol!!!
