How did the debate go?

Hubby had a couple of his buddies over and I've been watching little ones all night. I turned the TV on @ 8PM but couldn't find the channel with the debate(we have satellite). Hubby finally changed it over to regular TV @ 9:10PM but as I started to watch the kids wanted to play outside for a while so I followed them to keep my eye on 'em.

Interested in anyone's opinion...good or bad.

I think they both did well. I wouldn't say there was a clear winner though. I think Obama did better than McCain when talking economics but McCain did better talking about foreign policy. I agree more with what Obama said, His Idea's about the war in Iraq, but Mccain really showed is expertise on foreign policy. All in all in was a good debate.

cant wait for the VP debates.. Its gonna be soooo good. I have my popcorn all ready and my notepad to jot down any cute little quips made by palin.. It should be interesting. Im curious if Biden is going to play it safe and treat her with kids gloves.. I hope not. I mean, I don't think he should attack her or anything.. that's what they want... but don't be to easy on her either.

This will be the perfect opportunity to either silence her naysayers or prove them right.

Aren't the VP debates on tonight? If so, what time? EST here. Hubby is rearranging my living room as we speak. I can't look the time up on there because everything is disconnected...

Thursday.. 8 CST.. There are in St. Louis.. thats 25 minutes from me but I wont be heading over there.

It seems that Obama got some momentum by merely looking presidential. McCain was trying to paint him as an empty suit celebrity, meaning he can win by just going up there and sounding like he has a command of the issues.

O has the mo. Yo!

If I were ever thinking about going in to politics, the first thing I'd do is take some acting lessons. Obama seems to be able to pull off the same stunt that Reagan did. No matter what he's saying (or not saying) it pulls you right in and you find yourself nodding along.

Our current president, unfortunately, has the opposite effect. He could be imparting something of great importance and wisdom and no one wants to listen because of his smarmy manner and lousy delivery.

I do find myself doing that  Nodding in agreement as if he really understands. Does he? I don't know. I'm so jaded in my short, political-life interests. I think part of all of us want to believe these candidates have walked a mile in our shoes especially with the way life is today. We're hoping someone somewhere is going to fix it all and make it better.

What peeves me about Bush are his snarky responses. When asked important questions...questions americans want answers to...he replies as if he's being put upon, as if none of us have any business asking HIM about such matters.

omg! cafferty has me rolling.. talking about the debate on thursday he said something like he would crawl through a barbwire fence naked for a seat in front of the tv.

Well, we've been listening/watching Obama's podcasts for years. Several are when he meets with experts in a field, listens to them explain their area, and then he asks lots of really intelligent questions. He listens and learns and seems to take a lot away from it. I think being able to learn and not believe you already know the right answer is a great quality in a president.

Plus I think both he and Michelle had times growing up when things were tough. I think that gives one insight that people who have always been middle or upper class don't quite get. Maybe that's just my belief because I grew up poor myself, and perhaps I underestimate the ability of better off folks to have empathy. Still when I hear them say that $250k is middle class or only $5M and over is "rich", I have to think they don't quite get that the average American household makes between $40 and $50k! Personally, McCain lost any chance of my vote when he said that health insurance was too big of a burden on businesses and that they should not be required to provide health insurance because "people could get a better deal on their own" (probably not an exact quote, but I heard variations on this idea 3 times from him). First, as we've learned from my husband's company, reduced benefits never come with extra money to make up the difference. Second, anyone with a pre-existing condition is going to have a heck of a time getting good priced (or any) health insurance on their own.

I have to think they don't quite get that the average American household makes between $40 and $50k!

I feel the exact same way. Or less...some of us make less than $40K. My husband and I work hard for everything we have. We don't live off of our parents or the system. We don't ask anyone for anything. I'm not looking for a hand-out or a new social program. I'm looking for a way where we can work hard, support our family sufficiently, and enjoy life, all at the same time. A little empathy for hard-working citizens would be nice as well. I'm tired of worrying about heating bills, gas money, grocery money, health care, etc. I'd just like to be able to survive by living within our means. I don't think that's too much to ask.

I guess I should have said "mean" not "average". In spite of my statistics course many years ago, I don't feel I have a firm grasp of the terms. Half of American households make under this amount (40 to 50k) and half make more. I give a range because the most recent number was closer to $40k, but that was from a few years ago.

I'm amazed at the people who say "We're middle class, we only make $150k." I always tell them "own your wealth, you are at the top not the middle"! Early on in this campaign, Obama referred to middle class as those making under $75k and I thought - finally someone who can read the statistics!

Palin's either flat-out lying or getting it all wrong. Biden keeps correcting her and she diverts the attention to another topic entirely. Admit the deregulation already, Palin. America wants something "new and fresh?" Yeah, the truth!

Gosh darn I can't stand her :/

I can't believe she didn't respond with the facts concerning Pres. Carter & Clintons' role in lowering the bar for mortgages, thereby DIRECTLY causing our present financial crisis when deregulation was brought up!!!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/02/AR2008100204061.html

BIDEN: Complained about "economic policies of the last eight years" that led to "excessive deregulation."

THE FACTS: Biden voted for 1999 deregulation that liberal groups are blaming for part of the financial crisis today. The law allowed Wall Street investment banks to create the kind of mortgage-related securities at the core of the problem now. The law was widely backed by Republicans as well as by Democratic President Clinton, who argues it has stopped the crisis today from being worse.

well it wasnt the trainwreck I though it would be..

positives for palin

she didnt come off as unintelligent..
She held her own toe to toe with biden

negatives for palin

she didn't answer the questions.. not once or twice but several times.
The I'm just a country girl talk was irritating to say the least..
she gave stock answers that were obviously rehearsed.. that is why she kept reverting to them even when the question was on a totally different topic.

all in all I think she helped herself only.. she did not help McCain at all. Yes she looks better than she did yesterday but I don't think that will do anything to sway independent voters.

I think Biden was strong and knowledgeable.

This debate I don't think will make any difference to uncommitted voters.

I have a question...

is the under $75k middle class? is that 1,2,3,etc. per household?

I'm actually thinking about quitting my job, taking out a business loan, and possibly starting my own business... something i loveeeeeee doing.... i don't like my job now (never have )..... i want something more.... i'm just curious on what americans really "think" obama will change? will there be there mass "change" everyone seems to think there will be once he's in office.. i'm sooo confused honestly on who's right who's wrong....

I think alot of changes need to be made.... and to be honest.. is it obama.... is it mcCain? This is one hard election...

I'm not into politics but tonight I thought I'd flip over to network TV and see if I could make any sense of what these two were saying. It lasted about 2 minutes. Basically I flipped over to NBC, saw Sarah Palin, heard her mispronounce nuclear (she said "noo-kyoo-ler" like four times!!) and decided it was all the politics I could take for the day. I must say though that she is a cutie. That's neither here nor there though.

 yeah she is cute.. thats great for the PTA but not for the country.. And her winking and im just a soccer mom stuff is getting really old.

I can only tell ya why I am voting Obama.. I dont think he will change things overnight.. It took a long time to get in this mess its going to take some time to get out.

He wants everyone to have health insurance.. yes it will be expensive but IMO necessary.. If they can come up with the money to bail out wall street they can fix the health care issues in this country. McCains plan of a 5,000 credit is just.... well, ridiculous. I would like someone to tell me where a family can get health insurance for 5,000 a year? here is a good example of the two candidates health plans..
http://www.health08.org/sidebyside_results.cfm?c=5&c=16

He wont tax me.. McCain will. tax plans http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/06/09/ST2008060900950.html

He is a plan to get us out of Iraq.. Will it happen? I dont know for sure. I hope so. McCain doesnt have an exit strategy.. just more of the same.. well when we are done we will leave.. enough!. :cussing:

IMO McCain is to much like Bush. I have had enough of Bush politics to last me a life time. Not only that but McCain is not in the best shape.. Its not his age that concerns me but his health. Palin is in NO WAY qualified or capable of running this country and thats who would be in my opinion.

LMAO@ Dark!

I loved her, "I may not answer the questions the way the moderator or Joe wants me to, but I'm here to speak to the people of America..." Really? Then answer the bleeping question already! Speak to me!!

When Joe would point out how Bush has basically dropped the ball she'd say, "Oh, Joe, say it ain't so! There's that finger-pointing at the past again." Uh, yeah, since McCain's been a "Bush" man, basically, across the board. I think americans have the right to know what we're getting in regards to John, lady. I for one don't want history repeating itself.

What's a Joe 6 pack? I keep hearing her say that. Does she mean like the average Joe or the average Joe likes to drink a 6 pack? I'm picturing a man named Joe with nice abs, drinking a 6 pack

The winking was too much. I actually felt offended that she thought she was going to win me over with a wink. Maybe that was meant for the guys...
