Help with Twitter please: account suspended

I have never previously used Twitter. I opened an account tonight specifically so I could enter contests that require it or that offer extra entries for tweeting.

So I entered a handful of contests, and then I got this:

"This account, @BeckyNiendorff, was suspended for sending multiple unsolicited mentions to other users.

The mention and @reply features are intended to make communication between people on Twitter easier, and posting messages to several users in an unsolicited or egregious manner is considered an abuse of its use. Plus, it bothers other users! For more information about these features and proper use, please visit our @Replies and Mentions help page.

You will need to change your behavior to continue using Twitter. Repeat violations of the Twitter Rules may result in the permanent suspension of your account."

Then I had to check boxes saying I agree to behave, and enter a captcha, and I'm un-suspended, for now. But if just entering a few contests gets me suspended, what can I do? What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help!

I just followed you, and your timeline only shows 3 tweets, and does not say locked?

Thanks, Amy. I was wondering who that was that was following me. ;)

Yes, I had only sent 3 tweets, by entering contests which offered extra entries for tweeting, when I got the message. After I checked some boxes saying I agreed not to send unsolicited tweets, it lifted the suspension, but said I could receive a permanent suspension if I do this again. I thought that was weird since I had zero followers and had only sent 3 tweets. Maybe it was because I had just joined minutes before and immediately started entering these contests? I don't know. Haven't tried to do it again. I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens. I just don't want to get a permanent suspension.

I'm just wondering, has anyone else gotten this sort of message? Do you enter lots of contests a day involving twitter? Thanks for any help.

lol luckybecky - did ya follow back? :p

I've had a few problems with Facebook in the past, but not with Twitter.

From reading of others who have had problems, they were usually reported by someone who followed them/read their tweets, but since you didn't have any followers/had signed up moments before, I think you are correct, and Twitter assumed you were going to be a problem since you "had just joined minutes before and immediately started entering"

I tweet pretty much any promo that offers it - at 1st, I did try to keep track of who gave extra entries for tweeting, but now I only look out for those that give extra entries for GP's that I *don't* want to win - such as trip GP's - & I make a note to myself to not tweet them. So you *should* be OK.
