Just got this email, my first big win:

CONGRATULATIONS! You have been selected as as potential Grand Prize Winner in the Rockstar & Loaf N Jug Makita Sweepstake subject to your compliance with the Official Rules and the requirements set forth in this notification and your affidavit.

It says I have 48 hours to reply. There is no individual name to reply to, so I just hit reply to the email. Hope this is all I need to do and hope I hear back from them on Monday. Anyone have any experience with just replying to email when no individual is named? I'd really hate to lose out on my first big win.

I won the Makita 6 piece Combo Kit. ARV $425. My hubby is thrilled since he can make good use of all the tools.

I actually have had this happen. If I were you I would send another response that says "I accept the grand prize offered in....sweepstatkes". Ask them to please acknowledge your acceptance and request the appropiate paper work (affadavit that needs to be notorized). When you return the affadavit (do it ON TIME) and for goodness sake make a copy of all your paper work. Spend the money to return all the paperwork by a means (Fed Ex, UPS, certified mail or some means that you can track and get a signature). Most use a 3rd party for these things and handle lots of sweeps accounts.
Ok, here is a tax tip for you: You will have to pay tax on this, assuming the value is over $600. You only have to pay tax on the "fair market value". Chances are their value will be inflated. As soon as you know what it is go search the internet (and print) for values or you will have to pay tax on the value stated on the 1099 they send. For example if the value a trip at $4,500 and it includes airfare and hotel. Check the airfares from your city at the time they issue the tickets and print this. Same for the hotel when you know the hotel. Other items may be at face value or need to be checked on ebay, etc. There is a line item on your tax return that ask prize valued at:___ and another line under that that ask fair market value___. Keep all that stuff you printed in case you need to prove the value you claimed. You will thank me for this. LOL! I have won 5 trips so I know these things. Hope this info helps and hey...Congrats!

Good advice from +peg! Have hubby build you something you've been wanting! :-) Me, I'd want a sturdy rack in the garage to hang my cast iron cookware! Congratulations to you!

Congratulations! The advice from +peg was great and very helpful. I've never won anything big but now I know what to do. It's interesting that some companies ask for so much and some not. I had to do an affidavit for a $25.00 gift card, but someone else posted today that he received a $500 gc in the mail! Maybe he'd already gone through the paperwork and just didn't mention it.
Anyway, Good for you!
