Grand Prize..is it worth it.

I won the grand prize from Dannon, 2 season tickets to a nfl 2016 season. Sounds great, but they are putting a value of $6000 and they are only worth under $2500. They also are not telling me where the seats are. Of course if they are box seats, that increases the value. Just not sure how to deal with this problem. I don't want to pay taxes on something that is not that value.

Are they in a company's box? I once won 2 box seats in a company's box. It included free drinks and free food with a private bathroom. Prize never asked for SSN so I never paid taxes. Once won a color tv but the value was manufacturers list price. Went to several stores and received a print out from one store and an ad from the other with the same retail price. When I filed taxes I used retail sale price and included the printed materials with my taxes. State and federal taxes both accepted the retail price. If you can get documentation of the NFL box seats value than you can file using that value. If you have a team in mind, call the team office and tell them what you one. Ask if they can give you a representation of what the value is. Call the sponsor or Dannon and ask if there is someone knowledgeable about the prize as you have questions. I have won grand prizes numerous times and I have had to talk to sponsor or a judging company. Usually they are willing to help. I once won a Superbowl trip 4 days before game and had 2 hrs to accept or decline. I declined. Trip included airfare, hotel, game, a game party and transportation to and from airport and hotel. Trip did not include food or spending money. I would leave on Friday and return Monday. Trip was valued at over $10,000 which would have been around $2,000 for taxes. Hope this helps.
 
It does depend on the team and or stadium and demand. They may estimate the prize value at $6000, but the actual costs may be considerably lower. Also, I wouldn't worry about the taxes. If you enjoy football, then claim it. You can always set aside about $50 a month and put it in savings if you do end up owing.
 
It certainly seems to me you have the right to know exactly what you're getting before you accept it, seeing as you have to pay taxes on the ultimate value. Similarly to arnieray, I have had to reject a prize once before that involved a trip to somewhere simply because I couldn't pay the taxes and there was no cash prize compensation included as part of the prize package. These days, I usually only enter some sweeps if there are prizes for second place or lower and hope that I win that. All I can suggest is try to get in touch with someone, see if you can get anyone to give you more info.
 
Congrats on your win! We just bought our season tickets for the 2016-2017 NFL season. They are on the second level of seats and are on the visitors side. Ours cost $4500 for 2 season tickets. We are able to sell them our tickets on Ticketmaster for games we are not able to attend . So that might be an option for you.
 
You only have to pay taxes on the real value of the tickets. If they say they are worth $6000, but you can show that they are only worth $2500, you only have to claim $2500 as extra income on your taxes.

So it is entirely possible that your prize might be worth less when you receive it than when the rules were drafted, or that the ARV doesn’t match up to the best possible price for that product. If you can find a lower advertised price for your prize, you can declare that value on your taxes!"

Do you know how much you would have to pay in taxes? There's a good chance you would be able to sell them for more than you have to pay in taxes, so you would still come out ahead, ... but maybe it depends on the team. Twice I have won prizes that were overvalued - and I printed out my "proof" of the lower value and stuck it in my tax file for that year. If I were audited I could show those papers. I sold 2 seat for 800 and another set for 600 depends on the game you might come out ahead stubhub and ebay are places to sell I think you would at least get the taxes back even if its 33%like me
 
When you do your taxes,you place actual value on anything you win..not just what it says.I won a "trip" that was 250 miles away.It was for 4 people with air and hotel and tickets.We drove and only 2 of us went.They put the value at $10,000, but I had it adjusted to $1,200 by them.Find the value..they won't send the tax form till tax time so you have plenty of time to make them adjust it. Also, if they won't do it, you can still claim a lesser value..there are plenty of adjustment options on the tax forms.

i won a trip to superbowl last 2013 and was also worried because they value like $7000(its the pepsi company, i think eprize hold the promotion if im not mistaken) but when taxes came they ONLY wrote like $4,000 instead of the full prize. So you might want to call them about that and try to lower the ARV as much as possible, of course, with the price you found.
 
I would say it depends on where you are located as to how easy you can sell individual game tickets OR the entire season ticket package? What team is this for? Also, I agree with the others that you can call the judging agency/sponsor and find out the
location of the seats. then you can look them up on the stadium website and see what they are selling for.
 
Try to get more info from the sweeps provider and tell them your concerns. Also,talk to an accountant about this. Ask if you accept this prize and sell the tickets, does the price you sold them for establish the tax liability you will have to pay. Good luck and congrats on a very nice win.
 
Congrats ! I won two NFL tickets in another Dannon sweeps. There was a prize for the whole season in that one and I was pondering the same question if I won that (at first I knew I won, but was not sure if the season or two tix). A bit of relief that I did not win the entire season ! Did the fulfillment company say when you could pick your team, etc? I did not get a lot of info out of the rep. She said she'd "be in touch". That was a month ago.
