Downloading, installing XP SP3

I've spent almost my entire morning and afternoon on this! :cussing:

Here's the deal: Download and installation were successful. I restart computer so changes can take hold and my computer won't reboot. I have choices on how I'd like to reboot, only safe mode is the only option I can successfully manage. I can't reboot in normal mode, I can't reboot in mode with last good settings/configuration, only safe mode. Anything else keeps looping me back to my choices of reboot.

I have done my homework. I don't have the 2 SP2 updates that one needs to rid themselves of before dl and installing SP3. I disabled anti-virus software. I have ample disk space, and I have a successful dl and installation as I mentioned above. I just can't reboot computer in any other way but safe mode and that does no good except to do a system restore because SP3 wouldn't take.

Anyone know anything about SP3 and what I may be doing wrong or not doing that is necessary?

Thanks, Amy! I just posted my dilemma. I can't make out what I'm doing wrong or NOT doing. I've been troubleshooting all day as well as doing plenty system restores

You are most welcome! :headbang:

I read it - you covered the info they need - the only thing I'd suggest is you start a new thread :sunny:

You had to go and see that, didn't ya

I'm utterly embarrassed about that. I was so frazzled and so grateful that I didn't even stop to think wth I was doing :error: I went over there this morning and couldn't find my thread. And then I remembered...I didn't make one!!

Of course I did - I wanted to see if you mentioned I sent you & if they even remembered me  :crazytongue:

btw - chief knows his stuff too :headbang:

Hey Amy!

I went back to the site this morning and saw replies to my thread so I logged in so I could reply. It just keeps looping me back to the log in area. I don't know why

I wanted to tell them I already have SP1 and SP2. For whatever reason, they think I don't already have those. But I can't freaking tell them I do :cussing:

Hmm, I had no problem?

btw - Pete is probably correct - he usually is :

That it boots to safe mode, but not normal mode makes me suspect that there is incompatible software or drivers and that this is not a problem with windows or your computer.

I suggest using the clean boot option (use msconfig to disable everything) and then continue to add one item at a time until you identify the culprit.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Basically you go to start / run and type msconfig
choose the selective startup and uncheck all the boxes (load startup items, process system.ini, process win.ini etc)
This gives you windows normal mode just like safe mode. Then by adding one of the boxes at a time you can find which contains the problem items. Then go to that boxes tab and uncheck everything and reboot and add them back one at a time until you identify the culprit.
Then uninstall or disable until a solution can be found.

Also , check the event viewer (right click my computer, choose manage , event viewer) and see if you can identify the faulting application.

Not long after typing that up, I went back over and tried again. No go. So, I then ask for my password to be emailed to me. I had it right like I thought I did. Switch back over and God help me I was able to log in! Don't know what it was

Anyways, I was able to read what Pete had said. Hubby has his friend coming over tonight to try a couple of "things." If those don't work I'm going to wait til the bugs are worked out. I may try the msconfig thing in the near future. Right now, I'm so done with it all.

But Amy, thanks for extending yourself the way that you have! I truly appreciate it!

When he's done there, my house needs cleaning :booty"

If I could clone him I'd make a fortune :sunny:
