It only takes ONE ticket to win and one shouldn't spend more than they can afford, especially on national lottery games like Powerball and Mega Millions with odds like 1 in over 300 million or more of hitting the jackpot. Still, if you are going to play, purchase one ticket with the extra options. For example, Powerball offers the Power play option for one dollar more making one ticket $3. The extra dollar option provides a multiplier for prizes, so you have a chance to win the jackpot or at least get some cash back. Some states even offer a second option with Powerball called Double Play for another $1 more. A second set of numbers are drawn for the opportunity to win $10 million. Again, well worth the total cost of $4 a ticket. With Mega Millions, its a similar set up. A standard ticket costs $2 (for now) and if you add the Megaplier option for one dollar more it multiplies everything but the jackpot. For example, someone in my city matched five white balls and won $1 million dollars, but they didn't purchase the multiplier for one dollar more. Had they paid the one dollar more for the multiplier they would have won $3 million dollars, as the multiplier was 3X. So that one extra dollar would have been worth 2 million dollars. Of course, the Mega millions game is changing in the spring of 2025 to $5 a ticket, so that could all change. Individual state lottery games have better odds depending on the state.
