Bachelorette Tahitian Sweepstakes

I won a gift bag in the Bachelorette Tahitian Getaway sweepstakes. ABC said it was worth $3,655.00. When it arrived, it was all men's stuff-clothes, size 13 trainers, Anthony's lotions, etc. and 5 suitcases and backpacks, none of which matched. I totalled the retail value for the merchandize and it came to less than $2,000. I don't know if this was ABC's fault or the prize company in New York, but I will never enter another ABC sweep.

 lsipes Congrats on the win!!! :headbang:

When you win a sweepstakes prize, you are only required by the IRS to report the fair market value (FMV), not the sponsor's approximate retail value (ARV); but how do you go about finding out what the FMV is and how do you handle the difference on your taxes? Find out here.

I won a golden globes gift bag from Extra TV which had a declared value of $15,000. aside from a few nice handbags (1 retailed for $1500) the rest of the stuff in the box wasn't too exciting. The actual value of the items came to around $6000. I sent an email to extra about it and they said they base the value on what the companies who donate the items tell them. they also said this type of giveaway is not reported to the irs because they would have to report each item individually.
