Adobe Flash

Starting last night I have been having trouble with any sweeps that uses Adobe Flash. Firefox and IE won't allow it to run saying it is an unsafe program. Is anyone else having this problem and if so, do you know how to correct it? I tried re-downloading Adobe Flash but I can't because I keep getting the message that it is unsafe.

Oh YEA!! happened to me too I was on a site that wouldn't let me listen to a podcast until I fixed it! I asked my family because I didn't know how.

I can give you a **VERY general idea of how they fixed it because w/ computers I'm clueless basically.

If you have the Firefox browser look at the very top of the page there's 3 lines, looks like this:

___
___
___

It is in the very top of the right hand corner.

They clicked that, then it says "add ons" click that

then check to see if your plug ins are up to date you could click that.

I believe it sounds like you tried something like that though? HMM. Well, hope that works I know they clicked those three lines tho!!

Hi Colleen,

Some tech-savvy members will probably answer soon, but in the meantime, hope this helps---

I also had a problem last night with Adobe Flash update messages on my DH's computer, not doing sweeps. It was a real pita. He hasn't updated, so I tried updating Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader and I think it worked. I had to try several times.

Doll38 gave some useful advice, and also in Tech/Computer Help, there is a thread, which you probably checked...here is a quote from Amyshulk, which I think you can use. The links may be the same, even though the versions she mentions may not be the current ones. I always uncheck the box for McAffee antivirus (I don't want it).

Here is an article I just saw in the news:

heraldsun.com.au/business/breaking-news/google-mozilla-disable-flash/story-fnn9c0hb-1227442528124

"Google, Mozilla disable Flash"

"For a while Tuesday, Silicon Valley turned off its Flash.

Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome browsers blocked old versions Adobe’s animation software - often used to play online videos - following news reports that hackers were using a security bug to take over peoples’ computers.

The moves came two days after Facebook’s top security executive, Alex Stamos, publicly called for Adobe to discontinue Flash.

Long used to animate websites and play online videos, Flash has become equally known for security flaws and slowing down websites. Steve Jobs famously refused to allow Flash to be installed on iPhones and iPads, in part, because of security concerns. Over time, other animation tools have become widely used by many sites and browsers.

This latest dust-up comes after leaked documents showed Hacking Team, an Italian firm that sells digital surveillance tools to governments, had exploited a flaw in Flash.

After that technique leaked, other hackers quickly began to use it as well, according to researchers at security companies like FireEye FEYE -0.04% and Trend Micro 4704.TO +0.82%.

This left browser makers with an uncomfortable choice: Don’t let some users watch online videos, or expose them to hackers.

Google and Mozilla chose the latter.

Adobe released a patch Tuesday morning. If Flash is updated, both Firefox and Chrome will allow it to run, the companies said. Mozilla said it set Firefox set to automatically update Flash.

“Because the majority of attacks we are seeing are exploiting software installations that are not up-to-date on the latest security updates, users should update their installations immediately as the best possible defence against potential future attacks,” an Adobe spokesman said.

This story was first published in The Wall Street Journal."

My issue is that I can't update in IE - was able to update in FF

when I click the link from the test page; Adobe - Test Adobe Shockwave Player

& go to Test your Adobe Flash Player installation; Adobe - Flash Player

& try to go to the Player Download Center instead, it keeps going to https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-issues-windows-8.html

Maybe that is because there is not yet a patch (at the time of the article) for IE? "Adobe released a patch Tuesday morning. If Flash is updated, both Firefox and Chrome will allow it to run, the companies said. Mozilla said it set Firefox set to automatically update Flash."

Thank you everyone for your help! I finally got the newest version of flash installed on both firefox and IE and so far so good. Part of the problem was that I am not the smartest person when it comes to computers.

Glad you got it to work. Sounds like it wasn't you - Firefox and Chrome blocked older versions of Adobe Flash Player for a short time. Computers frustrate me too!
