Can Roboform Still Be Used?

Lately many of the sweepstakes rules list - The use of any automated launching or entry software or any other mechanical or electronic means that permits the participant to automatically register and/or enter repeatedly is prohibited and all such entries will be disqualified...

Other rules say the use of any Macros will disqualify the person from the sweepstakes. Isn't Roboform a macro?

Does this mean we need to manually enter our sweeps again?

Morning Venice

We discuss robo here:

Roboform

It's a form filler, nothing more. Most sponsors get that and don't consider robo "automatic entry" - they are referring to "bots" or programs that enter FOR you.

lwaxana:

A "bot" is an automated program that can be used for manipulating numerous email addresses, often for purposes of fraud. Sometimes cheaters write scripts that enter contests multiple times using many different email addresses for one person. The existence of bots is one reason why so many sweepstakes sites use "Captcha" code (words, letters, or numbers that you have to type in), so that they can make it difficult for non-humans to enter.

However, some do say it is a macro, and therefore not allowed. Every person has to make the decision for themselves on whether or not to use Robo.

Google - automated sweepstakes entry services - and you'll find a number of firms that'll (for a fee) automatically enter you in sweeps.

The information you've found in the rules is designed to prevent this type of entry. One of the reasons we must deal with Captchas is also to prevent these firms from entering you in sweepstakes. "Bots" are another reason for the use of Captchas.

Despite protestations to the contrary by these firms, sponsors don't like you to enter their sweeps via a 3rd party. They want you to personally visit the website, and become familiar with the Company and it's products and services. Otherwise, what's the point of sponsoring the sweep? They're not in business to give money away without receiving some advertising exposure in return.

The increasing use of this verbiage in the rules and the use of Captchas by sweepstakes sponsors and promoters is designed to eliminate entry by this method, not the use of Roboform.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to write rules prohibiting this activity without giving the appearance that it also includes Roboform.

As Amy pointed out, "Every person has to make the decision for themselves on whether or not to use Robo."

In a perfect world, no one would cheat by using bots, and everyone would personally visit the Sponsor's website.

Unfortunately, this hasn't happened so we all get caught up in the sponsors and promoters attempt to deal with the problem.

Thank you for all for explaining. I want to win honestly and have been entering manually wondering if a form filler would be considered a macro. I think I may go back to roboform though.

I knew the captcha codes were to prevent automated entries, it's just too bad that some people have to try and hack everything.

Yep, cheaters stink! I never won the DELL DELF, but they stopped running it because of them. :cussing:

Has anyone around here actually be DQ'ed by using Roboform?? I'm still on the fence as to whether or not to try it.

I've been sweeping in excess of fifteen years, both here and on (gasp!) other sites. I've never seen a post anywhere from someone who has been DQ'd 'cause they used Roboform.

:crazytongue:

Well that's excellent news to hear! I do believe I'll give it a shot. :headbang:
