The interwebs are going crazy right now about a trailer for low budget monster movie Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus - which you can watch here.

The production company behind the film, The Asylum, have developed a unique reputation for their shameless brand of B-Movie mayhem.

In business since 1997, Asylum specialise in the so-called 'Mockbuster' (though they prefer the term ‘tie-in’).

And they're more than just a nichey 'net thing. In 2005, Blockbuster ordered 100,000 copies of their film H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds - released just before the big-budget Spielberg version hit screens.

Since then, Asylum have used their particular skill set to cash in on the mega-budget marketing of major studio releases such as King Kong (King of The Lost World), Pirates of the Caribbean (Pirates of Treasure Island), and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (AVH: Alien vs. Hunter)...

Join us for a look a some of Asylum’s past output, the upcoming buzz machine Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, and a few films we hope they might make in the future...

I think this may be my favorite production company. I love bad movies. I cant wait to watch mega shark vs giant octopus.. lorenzo lamas and debbie gibson in the same movie with dialogue like... were dealing with a menace... omg, its going to be great.

since im on a bad movie kick I might as well share this link.. http://www.cracked.com/article_17047_5-most-half-assed-monsters-in-movie-history.html

You wouldn't think it would be that hard to come up with a movie monster. You just take what people are already afraid of, and make it either bigger, stronger or uglier. People are scared of crime, so you make a movie about a super-strong killer with a messed-up face behind a hockey mask. Boom. Collect your money.

But some writers seem to struggle with this concept. Badly. So, you wind up with movies like..

The Gingerdead Man
Death Bed: The Bed That Eats
The Mangler
The Lift
Night of the Lepus

I have seen the mangler and I have found the others at amazon but they are kinda pricey. 8.00 for a used copy of gingerdead man? 10.00 for a used copy of the bed that eats?

Giant prehistoric sea creatures destroying the California coast? And Deborah Gibson (yes, that Deborah Gibson) is the only one who can save the world? Be afraid. Be very afraid. "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus" may never come to a theater near you, but the trailer is everywhere since its debut on MTV.com this week.

The schlocky sci-fi thriller destined for the discount bin (it's direct to DVD) has already been viewed over 250,000 times on YouTube. As the video spread on the Web, searches on the monster movie surged. Lookups on "sea monsters," "mega shark vs giant octopus," and "deborah gibson" all heated up the Search box.

While the creature feature will not be promoted at Cannes, film buffs everywhere can appreciate the combination of questionable production values, mega monsters of the deep in mortal combat, imminent danger to humankind (or at least California), and an '80s pop sensation as a star.

Really, what's not to like? You can preview the video yourself -- then add the movie to your Netflix queue. Or search for it at your local DVD discount bin.
