Sweepstakes TV – More on TLC’s High Stakes Sweepers

It hasn't hit the airwaves yet, but TLC is busy assembling a new show called “High Stakes Sweepers”.  It's from the same folks who bring you “Toddlers and Tiaras” and “Extreme Couponing”, so I think it's safe to say they will focus on wacky fringe sweepers rather than normal folks like us.  According to TV Guide, TLC describes the “High Stakes Sweepers” show as being about “die-hard ‘sweepers,' who spend up to 60 hours per week searching for forms, buying products and testing their luck in thousands of contests in the hopes of winning anything from a tube of toothpaste to a trip to Italy.”

Let's take a look at that statement.  I'm sure many of us would enter for both the toothpaste and the trip.  No problem there.  But “60 hours per week”?  Really, I think that rules out most of us.  And “searching for forms”?  Psst…internet, it's great.  It's also where you can find SweepsAdvantage and SweepstakesPlus – we find the entry links for you!  “Buying products?”  Red alert on that one.  We true sweepers know about alternate entry links and mailing away for codes.  When possible, we also share them because we are a community, not a bunch of cutthroat loons.

Do I think the “High Stakes Sweepers” tv show is going to make sweepers look like crazies?  Almost certainly.  I also think it will introduce the hobby to an audience that did not realize how fantastic and prevalent sweepstakes are.  If we can make it through the squirmy moments, I'm hoping that sweepstakes awareness will turn out to be a positive thing for both the sponsors and us sweepstakes enthusiasts.

Also, ABC’s 20/20 will be running a segment about the show featuring one of the participants, Ret, this Friday (Aug 5).

As for the buying products, I have advice on that one – Always support the sponsor. Companies do not run sweeps out of the goodness of their hearts. It’s to generate sales. It also depends on the product. If a chocolate bar has a PIN in the wrapper and it costs $1, why would I spend the postage to mail-in a SASE that costs me more than $1? Plus I get the chocolate! Now, when the beer companies have PINs in the cases at $20-$30 per 24, then it’s worth mailing away for the NPE.
