The internet is a wonderful thing. I can go online at any hour and find sweepstakes to enter and other people who share that interest. Personally, I like the excitement of knowing that I could win a great prize at any time if I am persistent. The fact that the hobby is free is another big plus. However, until you can hold a fabulous prize under their noses, friends and family members may not “get” the pull of sweepstakes. Where, I wondered, could I meet other flesh and blood sweepers?
Having hear the term “sweepstakes cafe”, I pictured something like a Starbucks with all the patrons chatting it up as they typed in captcha codes. Although I have never been to one, my online research leads me to believe they are to be avoided. From what I can tell, a sweepstakes cafe sounds similar to a seedy gambling den with people who are desperate for a quick easy win. My skin is crawling already.
A true sweeper is always hoping for an awesome win, but is happy with any lucky win. The atmosphere is one of anticipation, not desperation. I picture a treasure hunter rather than Gamblers Anonymous candidate. My guess is that a sweepstakes convention would be a much better place to meet fellow treasure hunters.
This year's 22nd Annual Sweepstakes Convention just wrapped up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Those who were fortunate enough to attend got the spend the weekend in the company of other sweepers, discussing our hobby and participating in special sweepstakes, raffles, and activities. The location changes each year, and the 2012 convention is set to take place in Atlanta, Georgia. Perhaps I'll see you at the 23rd Annual Sweepstakes Convention?
