If you run a search, you will discover a number of Memorial Day sweepstakes. Some the prizes include electronics, a mystery prize, and food. The prizes vary, but winning any of them would be memorable.
This, however, is not the point of Memorial Day. Sure, it's great to have the day off work and kick off the summer season, but let's not forget the reason why this is a holiday. Originally called Decoration Day, the day was first recognized right after the U.S. Civil War as a day for citizens to remember the sacrifices of their soldiers. The actual day was not fixed at first, but both the North and the South used this time to remember their fallen. In fact, in 1913, the Blue-Grey reunion at Gettysburg, PA marked the 50th anniversary of the conflict and was attended by both Union and Confederate soldiers and their families.
The title “Memorial Day” was officially adopted after World War II when the day of remembrance was expanded to honor all US military who died serving their country. In 1968, the official observance of Memorial Day was declared to be the last Monday in May. Take a moment this Memorial Day to honor the brave men and women who proudly wore their uniforms and died in America's defense.
As we also have a number of Canadian visitors, please note that Canada just observed Victoria Day in remembrance of their honored fallen.
So enjoy the day off this Memorial Day, enter a few sweepstakes, and spare a thought for those who have earned the right to be remembered this day.
You will never understand the impact until you have had the wonderful opportunity to walk Arlington Cemetery. it is the most beautiful place in the world where people I love and respect now lay in rest.
