Better check carefully before accepting the prize. I learned a few things from my plane ticket win. First of all, mine was $600 for two tickets, not $3,000. Second, you have to claim that as income, you will get a 1099. If you don't use the tickets, you will have to request a corrected 1099. (I did not know this until after I filed my taxes and didn't want to bother with doing an amended form.) Third -- the reason I did not use my tickets is that they were not direct or single-layover flights. In order to get to my destination, which is two hours from here non-stop, they were putting me on flights that required me to make transfers in anywhere from three to five different airports with time spent traveling ranging up to 24 hours (and that's if I didn't miss any of those connecting flights!). Also, I could not give the tickets to someone else, I and my "traveling companion" had to use the tickets. It was even suggested here that I try to transfer the tickets to a non-profit organization and that was not allowed.
I"m sorry to bust your bubble. Plane tickets were the worst "prize" I ever won.
