Won Captain Morgan trip to U.S. Virgin Islands

I recently won a Captain Morgan "Sliced Caribbean Vacation Sweepstakes" ARV $8,000. We took the trip in January and it was awesome!! The trip included airfare and hotel for 2 at a beautiful luxury 4 star resort in St. Croix, a $1,000 gift card to cover food and incidentals. It was four nights and five days of bliss!
That is awesome! I probably would not have come back lol

I was curious just how much of a tax implication a win of that amount is? Nobody ever mentions that. I have only had to pay once for an $1100 Fender guitar signed by a rock band and I wound up owing half that for the win. I apologize for the lengthy comment but I just wanted to know if you or anyone realized beforehand that it’s going to cost you. Prize taxes are ridiculous IMHO.

I don't know how much we will have to pay in taxes yet - but I'm assuming that based on the ARV of $8,000 that we will have to pay about $1,500 maybe? Not sure. I'm told by the company that managed the captain morgan sweepstakes (it's a marketing firm called Avid Marketing Group), - that I'll receive a tax form to submit with our 2025 taxes (since we took the trip in 2025). The other fun drawback was that Captain Morgan gave us an american express gift card for $1,000 for food and incidentals. And surprise surprise the hotel they sent us to does not accept american express. I had to pay with my own money and then used the Amex gift card for other stuff (so it all worked out fine in the end).

I know. It’s sad that you have to sometimes turn down “free” prizes just because they aren’t worth paying the taxes on. I’ve had to turn down 3 bigger wins just because they were items that weren’t worth it to me to claim.

lol . Thanks for responding. That’s actually not bad for that trip. I think about that stuff when I enter the trip contests and I have to consider whether I am looking to take a trip anyway and/or whether I am willing to pay the price afterwards lol . Either way you got a great experience and I’m glad that it worked for you. I really like the contests that specify an additional amount of cash to offset those annoying tax charges.

I almost didn't come back!!! Even though I was traveling WITHIN the U.S. and only needed a drivers license to travel - I got stopped at the airport on the way back to Connecticut by Homeland security asking me questions about my citizenship!! I am a U.S. born citizen - but apparently they weren't convinced (this was Jan 28th after the orange cheeto took office)!!! Good thing I brought my passport JUST IN CASE (even though it was in my maiden name and not updated yet to my married name).
