Hi all,
Not sure whether I should post this here or in the winner's circle forum, but I won the Dierks Bentley Somewhere on a Beach Sweepstakes which includes a hotel, airfare, and tickets to the Dierks Bentley concert in Virginia Beach! Obviously I'm thrilled, but the person I've been emailing with has just sent me forms to fill out that ask for my social security number. Is this a normal practice, or is this a red flag for any of you? This is my first big win and I don't want my identity stolen. Thanks!

Congrats on your awesome win! Yes, they need your ssn for tax purposes. You will receive a 1099 at tax time to pay taxes on the trip.

The IRS requires a 1099 for win over $600. That's why they sent the affidavit. Normally, but not always, you'll need to get it Notarized. Occasionally, some firms want the affidavit for wins under $600 even though they're not required to report the smaller wins to the IRS. They're going to deduct the win as an expense on their tax returns, and want documentation in file to support the deduction. I'd disclose (claim) the dollar amount of each win on my 1040's when I've received a 1099, as it's probably going to be reported to the IRS by the sweep Sponsor.
