Which of these got me on the Nigerian Scammers list?

Of a sudden- I have been inundated with those "Nigerian" scam emails! OH man! I would get them from time to time over the years, but lately it's been four a day! Something is up.

I was wondering about some of the "sweeps" I have come across... there doesn't seem to be much info about the company running the contests..........

What do you all think about each of these: The Classic Heartland ones- these sort: "Prizeagency" http://www.prizeagency.com/cash/ The "new womenonline" one: http://newwomenonline.com/?page_id=23

and the spingweekly ones???????

I'm just blown away with the amount suddenly of the Nigerian scams. they got my email somewhere.

destiny907 - you said you've gotten them in the past, so it's more likely your addy was shared/sold by them than from any sweeps site.

Prizeagency has been determined to be no good and is not listed at SA.

I've noticed the same thing....I was barely getting any of these ridiculous emails, then all of a sudden - BAM. I have a feeling it's something we entered recently that was not a nice place! :nono:

Don't forget to check your entry forms carefully. Everytime you miss one of those "Hear from 3rd Party Sponsor" links, you are opening yourself up to their privacy (or lack thereof) policies. :nono:

I don't believe these lottery scams are related to any of these legitimate sweepstakes. I've been getting them for a long time now. They even call me from Jamaica now!

They can easily acquire your information through different venues. They can gather information simply by a tracking cookie placed on your computer. It can come from some form of advertisement that showed up on some site through a hacking process to get it on there. It can come from a obscure site you accidentally ended up on. It can come from buying address lists through shady 3rd parties. They can also easily get your address just off of certain searches on the internet.

It's so easy to gather addresses off the internet.

Short of changing your email address and telephone number, there's not much you can do to stop them other than hoping they stop.

The government, telephone companies, ISP's, etc., have been unable to do anything to stop these crooks.

It is funny you should say that, around the time i added prizeagency to my dailies i have been swamped with those emails and foreign lottery wins. I didn't realize that prizeagency had that reputation; i actually found it on another sweepstakes site.

Its very helpful to set up a specific email for sweeping because it seems like no matter what you do these things will show up....

I don't think it's related to sweepstakes sites, I just started looking for sweepstakes a few weeks ago, but I have been getting way more Nigerian scam emails the past 2 months than ever before.

I thought everyone knew about these scams, but I guess not, I actually had a friend a few weeks ago ask me if I thought she should try to help out the person and collect the money. I laughed so hard trying to explain it was a scam, she was so serious about it.

It must be they pull in a few suckers or it seems like they would just give it a rest already!

I got them right after Classic Heartland sweeps were added here and I entered them. So after moving, and a new email address, I never enter them and I don't get those emails anymore.

That was more than likely a coincidence. They are a major sponsor, and they do have a privacy policy:

"Privacy Policy: Classic Heartland will never share or disclose any personal information gathered during contests, song requests, financial contributions, etc., with any other person or entity for any reason whatsoever. Further, Classic Heartland will never solicit future donations from you via the telephone. Our sole purpose in collecting your telephone number is in case we need to contact you regarding that very contribution. Finally, Classic Heartland will not inundate you with constant postal or electronic mailings to solicit future donations. Instead, Classic Heartland may send out an occasional electronic mailing in an attempt to keep you informed on station happenings including fundraisers. However, these electronic mailings will not happen more frequently than once per month, and they always provide an 'unsubscribe' link allowing recipients to opt out of future mailings. While Classic Heartland may send postal mailings in the future, they will not occur more than twice per year."
