Tropical Storm Gustav

So do I miki and since the whole Golf coast is involved right now who knows where this one will go. I will post updated pics as they come available.
 
This is why I no longer live in FL. I hope it doesnt hit when its a 3 or above. those are really, really nasty. unfortantly as slow as it seems to moving there is a great chance of strengthening. Hope everyone is ready. get those flashlights, water, batteries.. etc.
 
Yeah I always have those things on hand. I am supposed to go to Louisiana this weekend but plans may change. I have a trailor down there on my parents land and it's my vacation home so I have to get out of Houston sometimes.
 
I wouldnt be going down there :laughing: I went through 3 in 6 weeks when I lived in FL so im good. I hate them. Especially the waiting. you just wait and watch and it seems like it always changes and just when ya think its not gonna hit ya it changes again.
 
I am waiting to see tomorrow where the cone of uncertainty shows it headed. We should know more by the time it gets in the Gulf.

Yeah I have been through a lot of them and Katrina was the last one. I was down there a little west of Baton Rouge. It just missed us.
 
My husband was talking about some of the drivers at his job having to go to the gulf for the next few days for load drops. He said he wanted to but, he wasn't chosen to do it. I told him that as much as I would like to see the ocean again, there is no way I'd go over there right now.
 
I can certainly understand that miki. :) And so I will wait and see. For all I know it might come in through Galveston. Even though we have plenty of warning they seem to switch course a little about 48 hours are so before they make landfall.
 
They have already started raising gas prices here...this blows my mind. I know that it is going to hit, but it is still a few days out right? They are already blaming the rising gas prices on the hurricane that hasn't hit...I know, I know the stockmarket game, but still it just makes me mad that the gas companies do this ever time that there is a bump anywhere in the country. Gas prices went up .20 cents overnight here!

I hope and pray that everyone in the area(s) that do get hit stay safe! What a scary site after Katrina and Rita ~ just doesn't seem like it has been that long ago.

I know it happens every time because they just don't know if the oil wells will be down for a long time or not. And the tropics are very busy right now. I don't like it either. For Rita we were out of gas for a couple days because everyone went crazy and stocked up. Everything just shut down and it was crazy.

Never thought about people stocking up ~ that makes a little more sense to me about the prices then. It seems like it would be dangerous to keep to much gas laying around in containers though...I guess you can tell that I haven't ever been in that type of situtation, so I am sorry that I am totally naive about what I do and don't know. Don't mean to seem insensitive to you all :love:

People have generators in case the electricity goes out which it usually does and you also need gas if you have to leave your home.
 
That makes sense ~ duh! Like I said...believe it or not, I have been out of Kentucky a time or two...they just don't let me out much anymore :laughing:
 
Hurricane Gustav gains strength on way to Cuba

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) — Gustav rapidly gained power early Saturday and verged on becoming a fearsome Category 3 hurricane as it neared western Cuba on a track to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast three years after Hurricane Katrina.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm grew into a Category 2 hurricane early Saturday with maximum winds of 100 mph.

By 5 a.m. EDT Saturday, Gustav's top sustained winds were near 110 mph, just short of the threshold for the Category 3 status that defines a major hurricane. The storm's eye was about 255 miles east-southeast of the western tip of Cuba and about 135 miles southeast of Cuba's isle of Youth. It was moving northwest near 12 mph.

Forecasters said it could become a Category 3 storm, with winds from 111 mph to 130 mph, anytime before reaching Cuba and could strengthen further over the Gulf of Mexico.

As much as 80 percent of the Gulf of Mexico's oil and gas production could be shut down as a precaution if Gustav enters as a major storm, weather research firm Planalytics predicted. Oil companies have already evacuated hundreds of workers from offshore platforms.

Retail gas prices rose Friday for the first time in 43 days as analysts warned that a direct hit on Gulf energy infrastructure could send pump prices hurtling toward $5 a gallon. Crude oil prices ended slightly lower in a volatile session as some traders feared supply disruptions and others bet the U.S. government will release supplies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Gustav was projected to hit Cuba's Isle of Youth, then cross the main island into the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday night or Sunday. Cuban state television announced that effective Saturday, all buses and trains to and from Havana will be suspended until further notice.

Gustav is now a Category 3 hurricane...wow, it grew quickly suddenly.
 
Well I went to Louisiana Friday night and came back Saturday night. It took us 10 hrs. to get from Baton Rouge to Housto. A trip that normally takes 5. It was awful so if you have to evacuate make sure you have a full tank of gas and a good runing vehicle. But it's better to be safe than sorry.
 
Landfall should be this morning sometime and it's right where all my family live. It will be a cat. 3 storm with winds as high as 115.
 
I am so glad this storm has weakened. Highway 55 has been congested here for the last couple days with people evacuating LA, and MS. The hotels are booked and they opened 2 shelters in town which I hear is also full. I left a message with an inlaw who works for DHS and CPS and told her that if they need anything, including volunteers to call me. I was so worried about everyone down there.
 
I am so worried that now that this one didn't come in as strong as they thought that the next hurricane that comes in might be like the 'little boy who cried wolf' syndrome and more people will stay.

When the mayor said that this one was the 'storm of the century' he got people's butts moving, but I just hope and pray that he is just as effective the next time around when it really is the big one coming in! It is a bad situation for everyone involved.
