[glow=pink,2,300]Okay, so here’s a question.

You get a phone call (or email), “Congrats you won a prize.” You might or might not remember entering the sweepstakes (‘cos we enter so many).

Of course, before they ship the prize, they need your social security number. I know that they need this for tax purposes. However, I still feel apprehensive about giving out my SSN to people I don’t know.

Any tips on how to deal with these situations?

:sunny: Unless that win notification comes with a 1099 form to fill out, I wouldn't give it out, especially over the phone or an email.

What pmeek said. I've never had to give out my SSN on the phone or an email for a legit win.
Also, you can search the expired sweeps to find the sweep you are supposed to have won and see if you entered it. :sunny:

Okay, so if I hear you right, I should politely ask that a “1099 tax form” be emailed/faxed/snail mailed to me and then give them my SSN that way.

Anyone every have a problem with getting them to send out a 1099?
(I thought I should research this before all my fantastic wins start piling up!)

Thanks for all the help!

Actually, they don't send you a 1099 to fill out. That's what they send in to the IRS to report your win. Most times, they send you an affidavit that has to be filled out and notarized. Seldomly, you may get an actual tax form to fill out for reporting income. Whenever I get a scam phone call, I tell them to Fedex me the affidavit. Of course, there isn't going to be one. Never give out that kind of information over the phone.

You may receive an IRS W-9 form or an affy asking for your SSN#. NEVER, EVER give your SSN out over the phone!!!!!

Also, you can search expired sweeps, here, to find the sweep you won. If you have a hard time finding it, there are lots of us here that are happy to help you locate it. That way, you can make sure it is, in fact, a bonafide win, before you even give out any information.

You are absolutely right to be over cautious! This thread is a great reminder for us all!! :sunny:
