Recipe contests

Who enters these? I do as many as I can, and won five contests so far. Oftentimes I just make up a recipe to fit the contest. It took me a long time before I won a recipe contest, but overall I have done very well. I stink at baking, but other dishes are easy for me to enter.

Note that a recipe contest is not a sweepstakes.

I've entered a couple of local contests, never won. I don't enter anymore.

What were some of the prizes that you won?

The first win was small, a few household products worth under $10. I won a $300 gift certificate, a cornbread contest awarded me a big basket of products, and the biggest was $5,200 and a trip to CA wine country. I think there was another one, but I can't remember.

WOW...congrats on the great wins. I've entered about 5 in the past year. Some really good recipes, or so I thought. Never heard anything back from any of them. I love Taste of Home and have entered a couple to them, but again, nothing from them.

I would love to enter them. I would have to learn how to cook though. well, I can cook I wouldnt call it good. but we arent starving.

Congrats to you !! I may try to enter one of these days when I get enough time or courage to write a recipe down. I dont want to poison anyone !!

I did poison the taste testers-sort of....The first time I actually talked to a JA was about a recipe contest-my vodka sorbet nearly killed them all so I did not win (because it probably would've killed the consumers, if the taste testers from the company were on the floor :error:). I adapted it from a lemon sorbet recipe which contained 3/4 pint of vodka.
I don't even drink and I never tried the recipe, I just adapted it from one I found at the BBC. Apparently you can't taste the vodka in it and its really good
I did get a big box of freebies, though, once they got over their hangovers :sunny:

I think Greensthings has won quite a few of those also ~ me nada!!!

I just won First Prize in the Bigelow Tea Dessert Recipe Contest!!! Yay!!
My prize was waiting by the door for me when I got home from work yesterday.
I won a beautiful wood tea chest, filled with 8 different Bigelow Teas, as well
as another 4 boxes of 20 teabags of various flavors of Bigelow Tea! This is
the best prize I've won!
Keep on entering!

Congrats on your win. I would love that.

My guess is these are very popular with sponsors because you are actually providing content using their products. In some cases, they want to add your recipes to their site, or their recipe booklet. Also, it forces the consumer to think of ways to use the food they're promoting.

There's less competition for this type of contest in general. Whether it's an essay, recipe, photo, whatever. Far fewer people want to bother.

I've tried a few but no luck. Never really tried seriously. Just quickly adapted a recipe from something else to fit their requirements.

LOL, why yes I have!
I have won about 3 dozen recipe contests in the last 3 years...
The biggest win was from Cattleman's BBQ sauce, they sent me to Memphis Tn, for the World BBQ Championships. http://memphisinmay.org/wbcc.htm where Cattleman's put a team together to make my recipe...and it was the Grand Champion winner!! They put us (My Husband and I) at the Madison Hotel http://www.madisonhotelmemphis.com/ gave us a VIP tour of Graceland, gave us a BBQ demonstration with several world known Chefs complete with autographed cookbooks, all meals and drinks were included, and an all expense paid tour of Beale Street with the president of Cattleman's (We all got pretty loaded) tickets to ride the trolley and a horse drawn carriage. and $500 spending cash.
The most recent win was last week, my recipe (full color picture of dish and credits) was included in the "Eat Up Slim Down, annual recipes, 2008 cookbook" I won the cookbook. Sponsored by McCormick.
My first recipe win was from The National Honey Board Tailgate recipe contest, I won $500.
I have been published in Better Homes and Gardens Sweepstakes, Quick and Simple, Taste of Home and a bunch of other magazines.
The trick...never adapt someone else's recipe, create your own original recipe (believe me....they check), and enter as many as you can find, there is much less competition on recipe contests, photo contests than a sweepstake.
My dream recipe contest to win? why the Million Dollar Pillsbury cook off!!

I enjoy entering them when I get a chance, I've been lucky in the past won $1500 from the mushroom council, got published in sunset magazine(I think they pay like $75 or something like that) A lot of them will send you free product coupons for entering, I won an m&M dessert one for a gift cert to the M&Mstore for hundred dollars. I haven't been entering any lately, some of them give such wonderful trips.
