Hi!
Received a certified letter from MGM containing an affidavit to fill out- but am not sure what the prize is -
please help:) Have already filled out the 2 pages of forms and mailed it out.. I think this contest ended in April 2007?

"Congratulations! You are the runner-up prize winner of our "MGM Movie Nights Sweepstakes"! You have won a Blu-ray movie disc. In order to claim your prize, please fill out the enclosed affidavit form."

So, would they send a certified letter just to let us know we have won a movie?
This is really great..having a long dry spell (lol, actually since we started sweeping)

there are many sponsors that send out affy's for prizes under $600 , so yes they could require the affy for a movie.

Just an FYI. All prizes that you win no matter how big or small are supposed to be reported to the IRS. However, the IRS requires that sponsors submit a 1099 on all prizes $600+ (sometimes they don't even though they are supposed to). For prizes under $600, it is up to the sponsor whether or not they want to file a 1099 on it. If they don't, you're on the honor system of reporting the prize.

This sweeps?

I don't do affys for leser prizes myself. Defeats the purpose!!!

For me, I've done them on every single prize we've won no matter how small. Ive even done them on dvd's. The few cents in taxes doesn't bother me. You always have to keep that in the back of your mind that if you enter for a prize you want, no matter what it's worth, you may possibly be required to fill out an affidavit. :meninblack:

Thanks for all the wonderful information and the help!

I didn't realize that every 'win' was reported to the IRS..as the only items (other than a package of licorice) we've won so far is 2 DVD's!

Wins aren't reported to the IRS by the sponsor unless you fill out an Affy. Like someone said you are on the honor system for the prizes where you don't fill out paperwork.
