Prize redemption issues

We recently were the winning bidders from an in-person silent auction. As seen in the the attached jpg, we were presented this certificate for a "Girls Night In with Stella & Dot." There were multiple prizes from many different vendors and donations, and there was no Stella & Dot representative explaining the details of the prize at the event.

When we reached out to the Stella & Dot contact regarding the prize, the stylist explained to us that the prize was actually a catered trunkshow in which she would show up at our house with 2 bottles of wine and cupcakes, along with jewelry to sell to our friends and family. Now in hindsight (hindsight is always 20/20), with background knowledge of how Stella & Dot functions, I suppose one could assume that the prize was a trunkshow. However, as people who did not have any knowledge of what Stella & Dot was, to us we thought we were bidding on 2 bottles of wine and a dozen cupcakes!

The stylist has stated that she can not give us the prize unless we host a Stella & Dot trunkshow with her.

We look for asterisks and fine print on the certificate to see if there was any definitions or stipulations regarding receiving the prize, and there were none. There was absolutely nothing about "winner must host trunkshow to receive prize" or "Girls Night In = trunkshow."

I know probably nothing will come from posting this here. And I get that it's possible we were in the wrong as we didn't fully understand the prize we were bidding on beforehand (but I promise the image was all that was provided from them!!!)

Has anyone else been through a similar situation? Any advice, thoughts, or words of encouragement would be appreciated.

I think you could file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and your state's attorney general. You may not get anything out of it, but it might make you feel better. Or maybe having the party and making sure your friends know in advance not to buy anything would make you feel better! Lol

Ha, I was thinking the same!

schwinny - The "You provide the friends" and especially the "Earn $100s in free accessories" would have had my spidey sense/hinky feelers all atingle - but then, I have never been at an in-person silent auction & don't know who/what Stella & Dot are so I probably would have skipped it.

btw - what is an in-person silent auction?

Thanks everyone! We might take your advice— at least for our own moral support, haha.

@amyshulk-- Yeap! In hindsight, "You provide the friends..." seems very fishy. But it didn't strike us at the time. In-person silent auctions are when you show up to an event, and you make a bidding for a prize. Like most auctions, the highest bidder wins, but in silent auctions, you don't know what the other bidders have bid. Usually these are done at charity events!!
