Money to be used towards?

I read these rules a lot when it comes to cash prizes. Some actually say you will get a check, others say may be used towards, and others to be used towards whatever the prize is. If it is the latter do they make you use the money on what they want? Here is an example:

Tylenol.Com - The Sleep Better Sleepstakes
Grand Prize (1): A $5,000 check to be used towards a bedroom makeover, along with ideas for a sleep friendly bedroom (ARV $5,000). First Prizes (50): A $1,000 check to be used towards a deluxe mattress and pillows (ARV $1,000 each). Sleep Guide (1,000)
Restrictions : 18+ US,DC | Limit : 1 Per Person / Email | Added : 03-01-09 | Expires : 04-30-2009 | Hits : 1584 | Rules

Just want to get it straight. Thanks.

I err on the side of caution & avoid sweeps that say "to be used towards" JIC they mean it MUST be used towards

"May be used towards" I'll enter. :)

I think it would be smart to avoid the "to be used for" sweeps too. It is awfully tempting to do some of those though. It's possible to enter them and if you can't get the cash then turn it down but I would hate to win something and have to turn it down. That would be a bummer.

Normally I like to save money, and use some to fix up the house and pay bills. Read the rules and often they award a cash prize to put toward something, but using it this way isn't mandatory. This has happened to me.
