Lot in Nicaragua

I don't usually report wins but this one was pretty awesome. At the very last minute, I entered a sweep that was endorsed by AARP (had to be 50 or over to enter) and sponsored by a subdivision development on Nicaragua's Pacific coast. At first I wasn't going to enter but then I thought, what the heck? A couple of days later, after two people declined the prize (one was only 48-read the rules!), the sponsor called me. After a day of thinking it over and investigating a bit more to make sure that it was legit, I accepted. The prize was a 6,000 square foot lot in a subdivision in Nicaragua called Montecristo. Our lot is in a great location - two miles (by golfcart) from the beach and near the future shops, gym, spa, etc. We've been in touch with four or five other lot owners through tripadvisor and a few other sources and they love it there. We plan to visit sometime this fall to see if we like it there enough to build on the lot. The sponsor sent us a big package including a CD with MBs worth of photos and info on the subdivision, samples of coffee and cocoa from the area, and a large coffee-table book on Nicaragua in Spanish. So far we've been asked for not one penny. When we go down there, we'll sign the deed/title. We'll owe Nicaraguan taxes on the land of about $90 for the year. We're terribly excited about the possibility of retiring down there or, at the very least, being snowbirds during the winters! ARV $33,000.

Good luck to all of you!

I remember that sweepstakes. I was eligible but did not enter. So glad an SA member won it. It sounds so exotic! Congratulations!

WOW how exciting.....I would say to make sure americans can own land in nicaragua...as I am right next to mexico and a lot of californians owned beach property in places like Rosarito beach in mexico and a few years ago all of a sudden their gov't said... "only mexicans can own land here" and tons of people lost their homes and property to an iminent domain type of screwing. The americans launched huge legal battles etc. and none won....I'm not trying to rain on your parade but it is something to look into b4 u spend any money...... :sunny: Hope it does work out for you.

CONGRATS!!!!! I SPONSOR A LITTLE GIRL THAT LIVES IN NICARAGUA AND THAT WOULD BE GREAT TO OWN A PIECE OF LAND IN HER HOMELAND!!! HAVE FUN!!!

Thanks for the congrats and for the info. The owners of the whole property are Americans so I know they've kept their ears to the ground. But que sera, sera. Right now I just want to visit. It's always an option to sell...but it sure is fun to be a landowner! :sunny:

Wow, that is a huge, unique win! Congrats!!

Good luck with your visit and your plans. :thewave:

:sunny: Well that is certainly a unique prize. Congratulations! Hope it turns out to be everything you hoped it would be and that there isn't alot of hidden costs involved.

I'm not in the forums much but I came in for something else and thought I'd give y'all a bit of an update.

My DH and I traveled to Nicaragua last November and visited our lot as well as other places in Nicaragua. The lot was okay but we found another one that we really loved - unfortunately it was mucho dinero. But we enjoyed our visit with the owner and the supervisor. We didn't have to sign any papers or pay any money. The owner was a bit upset that so many "professional sweepstakers" had entered her sweepstakes. But I did say that sweepstakers liked to retire in nice places, too! We're still not positive we actually own the lot but we know it isn't really worth anything until the lots are all sold so we're content enough with the way things stand.

Just thought I'd let y'all know that there were no hidden costs or any downside at all to this win. Good luck to all y'all (everyone in Southernese) in the future!
