I'm not sure of the best place to post this, but since it affects everyone who uses Facebook, it probably should be highlighted somewhere. Facebook has given everyone and email address (YOURNAME@facebook.com) and they've converted everyone's contact email to that address, an address most of us probably didn't even know we had. That means if you won a Facebook contest, the notice announcing your win is likely to go to that facebook.com address and you'll never see it!

In case you missed it, earlier in the week Forbes noticed that Facebook quietly changed the default emails showing on your profile to their proprietary @facebook.com emails. They did it without breathing a word of it. Which is not just borderline deceptive, it's fully deceptive. That said, it's all easily fixed so that you can get the email you want on your Facebook profile back to its proper state. Our fab friends at LifeHacker illustrated it easily and best:

Click "About" on your profile and scroll down to your email address. Click "Edit" to change them.

Click on the circle next to your Facebook email address and change its setting to "Hidden From Timeline".

Click on the circle next to your other email addresses and change their settings to "Shown On Timeline".

Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit popup (Don't forget this step).


So, gee, thanks again Facebook. You keep giving us reasons to hold you so close to our hearts in trust.
 
I saw that - yesterday/day before, I think? :scratch:

My 1st thought was - that's so not MY addy - & it's an addy with NOTHING but spam in it - the spiders are probably working overtime to collect them. :nono:

I tried to edit/delete it, but it wouldn't let me. I'll try again. TY for the instructions! :sunny:

So...

1st, FB goes to TIMELINE, which I have yet to find even ONE user say they prefer {I kept my FB page bookmarked, so I only see TIMELINE if I want to see it! :booty" }

Then, because FB is SO popular, the "kids" are dumping it in droves for TWITTER, TUMBLR, etc.

NOW this snafu? What a bone headed move FB!!! :nono:

And with the way major sponsors were migrating to FB to run their promos, I figured FB was here to stay - maybe I was wrong? :scratch:

However, it NEVER ocurred to me that a sponsor, who asks for your addy, would ignore what we put into that field in favor of a spam catching addy - why would they? Seems like MORE work for them to me? :scratch:

The gist of it is that personal address books are being modified without the users permission or even knowledge, that email is being misdirected and lost.

This is really scary stuff. And Facebook isn't responding to inquiries, making it all the more frustrating. I strongly urge everyone to read the full CNET report.
 
I am really confused now.

I changed my settings and am now showing my real email address in my timeline instead of my Facebook one.

Is that what I am supposed to do?

Will my real address be seen by everyone, friends and contest sites, now in my timeline or not? Since I changed it?

I just deleted the one they gave me & left it blank - we have to give our addy on our entry forms/when we register for a promo, so I can't see the point of sharing our addy on FB in the 1st place - unless it's to help companies that use FB? :scratch:
 
My Facebook account is attached to the email I use for sweeping when using FB. I always check my FB messages, regardless. So, either way....I would get my sweeps wins notices. No problems here.
 
When I make a post on facebook under family, it disappears the second I leave the site. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.
