how do they pick?

do the sponsors have a software program where it just (i do know) picks email addresses at random? it is like a lottery? or is it done with staff going thru all those entries? i'm just interested.
 
I am no expert, but from what I have read, there are several ways they do it. One way is to separate entries into groups and pick a group at random (i.e. like picking a numbered ball out of a hat) and then hand pick a winner out of that group. Like sticking your hand in and pulling one out. On the computer, they may push there finger down all the way, and where it stops, that is the winner. Like I said, I guess there are many ways to do it.
 
some of the smaller sweeps with not a great number of entries (and possibly those with hundreds of thousands of entries) use a random number generator. Prizeblade is one that uses a random number generator. If they have 251 entries they put in the program to choose a number from 1 to 251 and the program chooses a number. That number is the winner. Prizeblade shows their drawings live on the web at (I think) 11:00pm eastern time. They even show themselves putting in the number of entries etc.
