Gift Cards

Ok I'm just a fountain of questions today. I wanted to keep the topics seperate though...

I'm wondering how Visa or American Express gift cards work. Many sweeps offer them as prizes where they are preloaded. I realize it works similar to a debit card but what happens if you want to spend more than is on the card? Do all stores that accept the credit cards accept the gift cards? Has anyone had any trouble using them at any particular stores?

Thanks for your help! I haven't won one yet but I want to be prepared!
 
I have had great luck with the visa gift cards. the only thing that you must remember is that they are just like a credit card and you have to call a 1-800 telephone number to validate them before you can use them. I was planning on using a $50.00 visa GC just last week for some groceries and I got the card out and realized that I didn't call the number. I whipped out my cell phone and by the time it was my turn to be checked out - it was ready to go!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Just like when I have cash and $$$ in my bank, I ask the cashier which one she wants first. As long as you activate & use them soon (some will charge a monthly fee) they work the same.

They are my favorite win!!! :headbang:
 
They usually have a number on them so you can check the balance. The Amex ones come with a sticker so you can keep track right on the card. I like that. Most places, as long as they know the balance can use it. I usually use the ones with a few dollars left at the grocery store. Their systems are set up for multiple pay methods and have no problem with them.

Love gift cards. Just be careful. some will say "Debit" on the card, but when you go to use it , you use it as "credit".
