Essays, Stories, Video, and Photo

So, we've talked about blog contests (I've just started entering SOME of them) and caffeine contests (which I guess I am one of the few that actually like them), but what about all of the contests that make you write an essay, search the site for an answer (or look it up somewhere else), submit a photo of you ( :nono:)or videos? I hate those. I can never think of what to say, never find the answer (thanks to those that post it when they know/find it), hate having my picture taken and my camcorder isn't working and I don't think I'd want to submit a video of myself even if it did because that would be worse than a photo!!!! LOL!

So, what do you think now that I am off of my soapbox? Do you enter them? How do come up with what to say for the essays? I mean, if I could figure that out maybe I could enter those....

I enter some essay and photo contests but, I don't enter video sweeps. I haven't won either of them unless you count the slow churned ice cream party essay. I won that last year. It does tend to be frustrating at times but, I keep trying.

I really like the trivia ones. I don't mind looking up answers. Essays and photos though.. no way. I couldn't write a coherent essay to save my life.

One of my first big wins, way back in 1993, was a trip to the Napa Valley. It was an essay contest in which one could write, in 100 words or less, about their worst love experience. Now, I don't fancy myself a great writer, but, when I heard about the essay contest, I had a spark of imagination and whacked out an essay in about 10 minutes. The story sounded like I was talking about a man, up to the last line of the story, when I revealed that I was talking about my dead dog. I used to be able to recite that story, but, the years have taken their toll on my memory. Usually, though, I pass over the essay, photo, and video sweeps. I don't have a digital video cam and living alone, it's inconvenient to get someone to take a photo of me. I have entered a few other essay contests over the years and have won some 2nd and 3rd prizes for them. But, honestly, folks, some of these sweeps just require more brain power than I'm willing to expend on them. This is supposed to be a fun hobby and I just don't want to get bogged down.

I kinda like the essays. Have entered a few lately and hoping to hit one. One I entered recently was disappointing. It said you had to mention the words "diamond ring" in the essay. I made sure to do it and the finalists essays were posted and only one mentioned those words. I just assume they didn't want to DQ so many and let it go. I won a recipe sweep recently. I need to spend a little time on recipe sweeps. I mean to, but time runs out while I'm entering the easier ones.
